Description

Bad Republican by Meghan McCain

In her intimate, first audio memoir, Meghan McCain finds herself at a transitional moment: With the passing of her war-hero father and the birth of her daughter Liberty, Meghan realizes she’s becoming a different woman. Known as a Republican rebel and a departing cohost of The View, new mom Meghan McCain tells her story - in her own words. She invites listeners inside the unwavering heart and ferocious mind of a young conservative woman who refuses to back down.

With the aptly titled Bad Republican, McCain expresses how it is to feel like you no longer fit in with your political party. She tells of growing up the daughter of an American icon who shaped her life and details the heartbreaking final moments spent by his side. She recalls her (mis)adventures on the New York dating scene and brings us up to speed on meeting her now-husband. We hear her views on cancel culture and internet trolls as well as life backstage as the sole Republican at America’s most-watched daytime talk show - and why she decided to leave. Revealingly, she relays the awkward phone call she received from Donald and Melania and where she thinks the Republican Party and the country go from here. And with surprising candor, she divulges why a miscarriage and the birth of her daughter have left her so fired up about women’s rights - even if that puts her at odds with her party.

Unsparingly honest, deeply relatable, and highly entertaining, Bad Republican is as personal as a story gets. It’s a memoir imbued with an unmistakable maverick spirit.

Meghan REmarkleAble

Girl is amazing. The only reason I watched the view and stopped when she left. Her life story is very interesting. Her admiration for her entire family is wonderful to hear. Don’t care if you like her political views or not, well worth the read.

Empowering, WOW'ing & Impressive

It shouldn't be surprising & yet it is on how women treat each other on TV & in person. It's unfortunate but The View is less exciting with the lack of apposing views. It's absolutely shameful there isn't parental leave in America. Super fond of Meghan McCain she is a strong, powerful, self loving & self respecting woman.

A Humanizing Story of a Republican Dragged

Since becoming conscious of her through The View, I’ve always liked her, even though I mostly disagree with her politics. “Bad Republican” is a rundown of what was obvious about the female conservative experience among modern Liberal circles. She is a rich girl, with a famous daddy, and exudes entitlement, but she is also a strong female leader, influencer and ultimately, human.

McCain shares her very real and relatable human emotional story of grief, love and emotional growth, even when it isn’t pretty. Even though the connection she shared with her father is not something everyone can relate to, the gutted feeling of grieving a loved one is an experience that even the greatest of skeptics will shed tears for.

McCain also brings forward the taboo subject of miscarriage, which in 2022 in particular, is incredibly important story to tell in understanding women’s reproductive rights in North America. While McCain is staunchly Pro-life, her experience with miscarriage, particularly the procedure sometimes required when the body will not pass the pregnancy on its own, demonstrates the caution and care that is required in legislating women’s reproductive health care. While I think she might light me up for saying that, it is true nonetheless. McCain also explores the confusion, the inclination to blame herself and the social casualties of grieving what would have been and the emptiness of what is.

McCain reminds us that conservative television personalities are also affected by what people think, even if they don’t want anyone to know they do. She explores the toxicity of social media, the relentlessness of misogyny, and the drama that is created behind the scenes in order to make entertainment for the public, at the expense of the self. While McCain perpetually stumbles through the media tirade, there is a mark of growth in realizing that how we exercise our freedoms has consequences, even when we do the right thing.

The navigation through working on her own affiliation to conservatism is enlightening. It echos McCain’s later episodes on The View about the regressive changes in her party, but the importance of understanding how and why it happened, rather than writing Trump supporters off as “deplorable.” She re-iterates the compassion she feels for those who have been disenfranchised by a system that doesn’t seem to be built for them, even on what she would consider the far left.

This is not only a story of seemingly privileged, though remarkably human suffering, it is also an acknowledgement of the love and support she leans on in order to overcome it all, demonstrating how important it is to surround yourself with people who love you, even if they don’t always agree with you. From her parents and siblings, to friends, and her husband and daughter, she shows us that with support, the wounds become scars. Nothing is ever quite the same, but there is healing.

While the writing itself is clearly the voice of a millennial with all the “like’s” and “whatever’s,” and the timeline doesn’t always seem consistent, it is true to who she and millennials of any political leaning can appreciate the informalities. No one will ever consider this high level literature, but it is an opportunity to look across the aisle and see a political adversary as a fellow woman, who is learning and growing with time and experience.

McCain shows us she is human and that to survive this thing called life we must “let it go.”

One badass gal!

I am became a fan of Meghan’s when she started appearing on The View. Though I would consider myself a Liberal in my political beliefs and have a different position on certain policies, I have a lot of respect for her. She is candid, STRONG, informed and a very good TV personality bringing her voice as a conservative/“Bad” Republican. While she had a very different upbringing than me, I empathized with the challenges she has faced (Fuck Cancer indeed!), I related to the struggle in her job and with dating. This memoir reinforced my belief that she was raised by a family with strong values, faith and to be a good honest human being. I think she’d be a blast to have a glass of whiskey or wine with. She keeps it real.

a woe-is-me tale of privilege

I was interested to hear what Meghan would say about situations in her life. any time there was conflict on The View there was always a "because" and finger pointing that everyone was against her. now, with no interruptions, she continues her monotone whining as if nobody has ever had it as hard as her. The pregnancy story, while sad, isn't unique to her. but somehow the nurses were bad and nobody respected her. then the death of her dad, again while sad, shouldn't be about her at all. The more compelling story is from the patient's point of view. The entire recount (complete with audio from her eulogy at the funeral, and noting how she got applause which had never happened in that building during a funeral) is all about how John's death is her story. The funeral was about her. she says she was pissed at him for having her speak at the funeral. It's the woe-is-me factor we always saw on The View. I'm only halfway through the book but it's definitely a rant about how the world has done her wrong at every turn. Perhaps it gets upbeat and positive toward the end. I'm not so hopeful though.

As repulsive as on TV

I was curious if there was anything redeeming about her personality or opinions that may have been masked in favour of entertainment. Afraid not. She tells uninspiring stories and paints herself as a woman who is selfish, narcissistic, and undeserving of all the "hardships" that she has endured. Losing a parent and giving birth are hardly rare or unique tragedies.
