I enjoyed this book while I was reading it - I liked the characters, the development, and the twists...but then forgot a large portion of the particulars nearly immediately. If I hadn't had to write an essay on this book, I probably wouldn't have taken much away from it. The characters are recognizable archetypes today but the situations they're in are not, so it's not the most accessible to today's reader. There's also a change in tone in the 3rd act, plus there are some loose ends that probably could have been wrapped up. I can see why it's a classic and there are people I'd definitely recommend it to...just not everybody.
