When he opened the FBI investigation into Russia’s election interference, Peter Strzok had already spent more than two decades defending the United States against foreign threats. His career in counterintelligence ended shortly thereafter, when the Trump administration used his private expression of political opinions to force him out of the Bureau in August 2018. But by that time, Strzok had seen more than enough to convince him that the commander in chief had fallen under the sway of America’s adversary in the Kremlin.

Donald Trump's campaign chairman went to jail. So did his personal lawyer. His long-time political consigliere was convicted of serious federal crimes, and his national security advisor pled guilty to others. Career intelligence agents and military officers were alarmed enough by the president's actions that they alerted senior government officials and ignited the impeachment process. Yet despite all this, a years-long inquiry led by special counsel Robert Mueller, and the third impeachment of a president in American history, Donald Trump survived to run for re-election. Why?

Dereliction of Duty is a stunning analysis of how and why the United States became involved in an all-out and disastrous war in Southeast Asia. Fully and convincingly researched, based on transcripts and personal accounts of crucial meetings, confrontations, and decisions, it is the only book that fully re-creates what happened and why. McMaster pinpoints the policies and decisions that got the United States into the morass and reveals who made these decisions and the motives behind them, disproving the published theories of other historians and excuses of the participants.

When bean counters take over

Description
From Lt. General H.R. McMaster, US Army, ret., the former national security advisor and author of the best-selling classic Dereliction of Duty, comes a bold and provocative re-examination of the most critical foreign policy and national security challenges that face the United States, and an urgent call to compete to preserve America’s standing and security.
Across multiple administrations since the end of the Cold War, American foreign policy has been misconceived, inconsistent, and poorly implemented. As a result, America and the free world have fallen behind rivals in power and influence. Meanwhile threats to security, freedom, and prosperity such as nuclear proliferation and jihadist terrorism have grown. In Battlegrounds, H.R. McMaster describes efforts to reassess and fundamentally shift policies while he was national security advisor. And he provides a clear pathway forward to improve strategic competence and prevail in complex competitions against our adversaries.
Battlegrounds is a groundbreaking reassessment of America’s place in the world, drawing from McMaster’s long engagement with these issues, including 34 years of service in the US Army with multiple tours of duty in battlegrounds overseas and his 13 months as national security advisor in the Trump White House. It is also a powerful call for Americans and citizens of the free world to transcend the vitriol of partisan political discourse, better educate themselves about the most significant challenges to national and international security, and work together to secure peace and prosperity for future generations.

Every American should read
It is so important to understand the world we live in. This is a great analysis of how we interact with the world, which starts with understanding their views and goals. It is time Americans look for what we have in common and talk in facts and strategy instead of divisive personal attacks.

Remember: This guy was fired! WTF.
As I read this, I kept thinking: Shouldn’t the POTUS be receiving this information in his daily briefings on National Security? Shouldn’t this be explained if he doesn’t understand it?Why in the world would McMaster be fired? Too truthful? Did anybody think to handcuff the present quasi leader of the “free world”, to his chair to listen to this stuff for a 1/2 hour a day, instead of FOX News? As an Army Veteran, I am dismayed that the United States has blundered its leadership role in the world. Absolutely blundered it, for the almighty buck. Not only did the Government blunder it, they cut taxes and borrowed the money, and financed China’s military buildup with the interest! And... continue to do so!! We’re financing our own demise by not paying taxes, and borrowing the tax revenue, instead of collecting the tax revenue. Come on, nobody likes paying taxes, but I also don’t like the idea of my grandchildren speaking Chinese. McMaster lays it out here for everyone to see how we’re losing. And... we’re losing. We’re fighting with each other, listening to lies made up by adversaries, and our politicians are repeating the BS that the Russians, Chinese, and others put out in Social Media, and others. Concise, accurate, unbiased information that we as a nation better wake up and start smelling the coffee. Come on America. Time to be America again!

Great Read for the Curious Layman
First, the General, stays non-partisan. This nuance allowed me to let my guard down and just listen and learn. I appreciated his rigor. Second, you don’t need to be a hardcore policy wonk to enjoy this book. It’s well written, and well read by the General himself.

I enjoyed this book. As advertised it was not a tell all inside book about his time inside the Trump whitehouse. The chapters on China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia were the bulk of the book and just outstanding. I highly recommend this title to anyone interested in the general subject area of current American foreign policy.

Riveting & Realistic
This book is GREAT. I cannot put it down, or turn off the audio player I should say. “Battlegrounds”is read by the author himself who has a flair for dramatic reading. HR McMaster’s combination of public speaking skills, his clear and direct writing style, and page after page of wisdom from the past combined with vision for the future make this a “must listen” for anyone who cares about the future of the United States of America and, indeed, the world we live in.

A Must Read
This book is so well researched, so well written, and so apolitical that is should be required reading for all American citizens. In a complex and rapidly evolving world, the interdependence of global politics, the global economy, terrorism and other global challenges, and the need for leadership has never been more evident. After reading this book, I am not only smarter but better equipped to understand the world and America’s place in it.
