Histoire
In January 1956, a tragic story flooded headlines around the world. Five men, spurred by a passion to share the good news of Jesus Christ, ventured deep into the jungles of Ecuador. Their goal: to make contact with an isolated tribe whose previous response to the outside world had been to attack all strangers. Through Gates of Splendor, the story of Nate Saint, Roger Youderian, Ed McCully, Pete Fleming, and Jim Elliot, was first recorded in 1956 by Jim's widow, Elisabeth.

Christians know what Jesus Christ has done — but who is he? What is his deepest heart for his people, weary and faltering on their journey toward heaven? Jesus said he is "gentle and lowly in heart." This audiobook reflects on these words, opening up a neglected yet central truth about who he is for sinners and sufferers today.

Description
Elisabeth Elliot was a young missionary in Ecuador when members of a violent Amazonian tribe savagely speared her husband, Jim, and his four colleagues. Incredibly, prayerfully, Elisabeth took her toddler daughter, snakebite kit, Bible, and journal...and lived in the jungle with the stone-age people who killed her husband. Compelled by her friendship and forgiveness, many came to faith in Jesus. This courageous, no-nonsense Christian went on to write dozens of books, host a long-running radio show, and speak at conferences all over the world. She was a pillar of coherent, committed faith; a beloved and sometimes controversial icon.
In this authorized biography, Becoming Elisabeth Elliot, best-selling author Ellen Vaughn uses Elisabeth’s private, unpublished journals, and candid interviews with her family and friends, to paint the adventures and misadventures God used to shape one of the most influential women in modern church history. It’s the story of a hilarious, sensual, brilliant, witty, self-deprecating, sensitive, radical, and surprisingly relatable person utterly submitted to doing God’s will, no matter how high the cost.
For Elisabeth, the central question was not, “How does this make me feel?” but, simply, “Is this true?” If so, then the next question was, “What do I need to do about it to obey God?”
“My life is on Thy Altar, Lord - for Thee to consume. Set the fire, Father! Bind me with cords of love to the Altar. Hold me there. Let me remember the Cross.” (Elisabeth Elliot, age 21)

Decipleship and it's cost
The narrator did an exceptional job. How can one rate someone's own story? We just rate the way it is told. And a first-rate job the author did. Keeping journals with such personal content is amazing in today's world.

Inspiring!
Absolutely inspiring and encouraging account of Elisabeth Elliot’s early life. Though flawed and sinful like the rest of us: God was indeed glorified in the life of Elisabeth Elliot. May He continue to be praised as more people hear her story. I look forward to the author’s account of her later life.

Worth your time
This book is in the top 5 impacting books ever read/ listened to in my life!
The author shows the positive and negatives - the real Elizabeth. Whatever you do make sure you read the last couple chapters. Especially chapter 41. But really you have to read the whole book in order to appreciate the last chapter fully. A book you can read a few times and still get more out of it.
