À propos de cet audio

As soon as we open the door to our beautiful new home, I sense their presence . . . the couple who lived here before us.

They’ve left things behind, as if on purpose, for us to find. First, there is the mysterious diary that ends too abruptly, followed by pictures of a couple in their thirties, just like us. Tired-looking parents with two small children. Who are they?

I haven’t finished the book, but I’m going to, because I’m curious. However, I found the narration was sub par. The two narrators themselves are alright, but I think the editors (if there are any) could have made a few technical adjustments. The story is told from two points of view, Rachel on one chapter read by one narrator, and Lucy on the next chapter read by the other narrator, with each chapter alternating back and forth. The speed was inconsistent… I needed to adjust speed on every chapter - one up to 1.1 and the next down to 1.0.

Narration could have used some editing

Although I must admit that I guessed some of the outcome, the story was so well crafted that it didn’t matter. Also, the ultimate ending was a surprise. Well narrated, which, for me at least, can ruin the story. Worth the listen.

Thoroughly Enjoyed

This Jane E. James book follows two women in two different timelines 2 years apart. Casual, manipulative infidelity + sex abounds in this tale about betrayal & lies where they meet and/or have met and/or scheme to meet each others children + husbands.
The writing is capable.. but I found that I really had to concentrate just to keep the characters, relationships, and couplings straight. Failing to fixate on what was happening in any segment of the book left me completely lost. I had to restart chapters time after time simply to reorient myself.

As to presentation: the tandem narrators Sarah Kants & Gabrielle Nellis-Pain are professional but unspectacular. That's not to say that the performance is inferior, mind you.. just that I was left with the impression that Audible Studios Inc. could have gotten similar results from any SAG-AFTRA reader in their stable.

Altogether, 'Before Us' merits 6.5 stars out of 10. It was a reasonable distraction for free.. but if it leaves the 'Plus' menu, save your Credit for something less convoluted.

Tangled Book

I can confidently say that this audiobook captured my attention from beginning to end, even causing for me to look forward to my work commutes so I could know what happens next.

This audiobook’s chapters constantly going from the previous homeowner to the new homeowner turned out to be quite fun, especially when they paralleled each other and even intertwined, at times. The audio novel had us moving seamlessly between then and now, without causing any timeline confusion in the process.

Both narrators proved to be a masterclass in excellence; their emotive, versatile voices made this audiobook as immersive as can be. I genuinely hope Sarah Kants and Gabrielle Nellis-Pain get their flowers for their respective performances, if they haven’t already.

The story itself contained many twists and turns, enough so to have me gasp out loud in my car at times (even if I managed to guess some!). I saw Tony’s true identity coming early on, yet found that it didn’t take away from my interest in everything else going on. If anything, it just had me more excited for the reveal to confirm my ever-growing suspicions.

While the ending felt a little rushed and did not end on a positive note, it was also fitting given the dramatic adventure we’d been taken on and I’m not angry with it.

Overall, I would recommend this to a friend who enjoys a good thriller!

A thrilling ride, from start to finish!
