Description

In this twisty psychological thriller from the New York Times best-selling author of The Girl Before, an actress plays both sides of a murder investigation.

"A compelling read...redefines the concept of an unreliable narrator...[a] rich, nuanced, highly literary take on the Gone Girl theme." (Booklist)

A struggling actor, a Brit in America without a green card, Claire needs work and money to survive. Then she gets both. But nothing like she expected.

Claire agrees to become a decoy for a firm of divorce lawyers. Hired to entrap straying husbands, she must catch them on tape with their seductive propositions.

The rules? Never hit on the mark directly. Make it clear you’re available, but he has to proposition you, not the other way around. The firm is after evidence, not coercion. The innocent have nothing to hide.

Then the game changes.

When the wife of one of Claire’s targets is violently murdered, the cops are sure the husband is to blame. Desperate to catch him before he kills again, they enlist Claire to lure him into a confession.

Claire can do this. She’s brilliant at assuming a voice and an identity. For a woman who’s mastered the art of manipulation, how difficult could it be to tempt a killer into a trap?

But who is the decoy...and who is the prey?

Read by Sally Scott, with Matt Reeves, Lorelei King, John Chancer, and Eric Meyers.

Never want to hear the name "Baudelaire" again.

"Believe Me" left me with mixed feelings, believe me. First, about the immersion-narration. I wasn't expecting it and haven't experienced this type of audio before, even though I listen to a hundred or more books a year, I swear. I thought it was odd and disconcerting. I didn't like the way it was done. As for the narration itself, some of the American accents sounded like British people speaking with American accents, which I feel is unnecessary and forced-either that, or the American narrators were just poor. It's bad enough that Ms. Scott had to force her poor American accent while Claire was 'acting.' When Claire was being Midwestern, she sounded Southern, for example. Sally Scott's regular British narration is great. The weird background-noise scenes were plainly uncomfortable and just distracting.

The plot is just okay. It took a while for me to get into the book, and once I did, I was able to engage more in the plot and I felt that the last 1/4 of the book was quite good. I was highly annoyed by the Baudelaire theme(s) by the end of the book, however, and felt that much of it was repetitive and overdone. I cannot help but wonder what the author's obsession is, personally. Also, I was confused by the serial killer angle, to some extent (I don't think this is a spoiler). That part of the storyline was actually interesting when it was introduced, then it fell by the wayside and was never fully resolved as to fact or fiction. But, reader beware: fact or fiction is a major theme in this novel and that is not a bad thing. It's a psychological thriller to the max, and that I can appreciate. I just felt that there were too many weaknesses between the narration, the 'immersion' audio, and the plot. Overall, like I said, Believe Me is just okay.

Wow, Wow, Wow!

I loved this book. This is a true psychological thriller. You think you know but then it turns and you’re taken in a different direction. I loved the narrator and the scenes with a movie-like quality. I haven’t heard that before in the books I’ve listened to. If you like a mystery this books for you. I couldn’t stop listening. I finished it in less than 2 days.

Unconvincing story, annoying narration

First off, the story is really unconvincing. I don't know if it was just the strange plot or the fact that the characters lacked any believable depth. The first part was actually interesting, which is why I felt compelled to finish it. But during the rest of the book I found myself rolling my eyes at least once every 10 minutes and coming very close to giving up altogether each time. I guess I'm stubborn.

The narration was distracting to say the least, the American accents done by the narrator was like listening to Harley Quinn for half the book (not a pleasant experience) or a computer the other half (doesn't really communicate emotion or passion). And the fact that even the American characters pronounce the name Stella as "Steller" takes you out of the story every time as you remind yourself "oh yeah, the narrator is British".

Believe Me

Well written, character driven thriller but lacked the fun of THE GIRL BEFORE. The narration was exquisite. I gave the story and overall only 3 stars because this novel was exceptionally dark, morbid, graphic and (to me) disturbing.

Letdown

The story had a great start, but it lost momentum and became an implausible mess. Even with the decent narration and "sound effects" ( personally I don't like these in an audiobook ) this is a big letdown.

don't waste a credit

I want to preface by saying that I loved The Girl Before, so I was excited to delve into another book by this author. This was the most unbelievable story, and became so boring I was praying for it to end..not to mention, the multiple narrators listed on the page are misleading. There is a single female narrator and odd sound effects as if this were an old-time radio show. You have to go beyond "willing" to suspend disbelief. Very strange

A tedious movie script with tedious narration.

I am so happy this book is finally over! I was taken in by all of the positive reviews, but I should have read ALL of the reviews. Zero character development and laborious, dawn-out narration with a completely implausible, ridiculous storyline with too many holes in it. While there are some mind games going on here, I just didn’t care and wanted to quit this book, but I had used a purchased credit for it! I had never heard of Charles Baudelaire or his book “Les Fleurs du mai” before this, and if I ever hear those two names spoken of again, I will scream...like I wanted to do after about the 500,000th time they were mentioned in this story. I couldn’t find one character with any redeeming qualities. In fact, the protagonist in this is a self absorbed, struggling British actress, prone to fantasies and without a green card, living in New York, and I was hoping at the end she would be deported! If you are obsessed... and I mean OBSESSED, with Baudelaire and acting, this is your book. If not, you might want to keep looking. It would however, probably make for a good movie. Perhaps that’s what the author is hoping for.
