Description

A 2017 Nautilus Gold Award winner.

Feel like you don’t belong? You’re not alone. The world has never been more connected, yet people are lonelier than ever. Whether we feel unworthy, alienated, or anxious about our place in the world, the absence of belonging is the great silent wound of our times.

Most people think of belonging as a mythical place, and they spend a lifetime searching for it in vain. But what if belonging isn’t a place at all? What if it’s a skill that has been lost or forgotten?

With her signature depth and eloquence, Toko-pa maps a path to belonging from the inside out. Drawing on myth, stories, and dreams, she takes us into the origins of our estrangement, reframing exile as a necessary initiation into authenticity. Then she shares the competencies of belonging: a set of ancestral practices to heal our wounds and restore true belonging to our lives and to the world.

Love love love

This book is not one I just listened to, there are so many exerts I wanted to right down and ponder, I had to also buy the book. Wonderfully written and one I will be “studying” for some time.

Could not listen

I could not listen to this book. The way she speaks and the gasping for air is too distracting. I wish I had bought the book instead of this, I tried but I really couldn’t bare it. Unfortunate that no one in the process of making the audio book noticed it wasn’t working ??

Poor quality

I’m upset because the audio quality was terrible. I didn’t enjoy the narrator’s speaking style—not her voice but how she spoke: It felt patronizing in so many ways. There was some amazing parts of this book but overall I felt letdown.

Mixed Messages

I was excited for the content of this book, but the author really isn’t the best to narrate it. I found her way of narrating to be very dramatic, distracting me from the story- and clearly she is still very resentful of her past, which sets a negative tone to the whole story. I found myself unable to receive the message because of these two things. In my opinion belonging isn’t something we seek out of rebellion to those who didn’t accept us.

mega medicine, a totally therapeutic listen

wow. thank you so much Toko-pa for putting all of these ancient/contemporary profound processes into such beautiful, kind words... & weaving it all together with stories and dreams. it's a masterpiece. it's creative and colourful and relateable. it's as awesome and healthy as being in therapy. it puts my childhood experiences into a much broader and more compassionate perspective. it IS sometimes triggering. but I'm not shying away from that so much anymore. I'm really glad I don't agree with the other reviews; but, I know, I also find it very difficult/sometimes impossible to listen to audiobooks when I don't resonate with the narrator, or they seem unsuitable for the style of the literature. but/& it's true, something Toko-pa is a little bit "overly dramatic" with the narration. it's curious that she even talks about that being something her mom would criticise her about. I would imagine mom's like that (& kinda like mine too) tend to zero in on some part of our gifts. & hello: life IS dramatic, so whatever. I think it's appropriate. if you don't like drama I hope you aren't watching ... um... any movies, let's say. or Netflix. Anyway, what she has to say is SO greatly valuable and healing and well written, that if you can't listen to it, but are needing help with mental traps/inner critic/victim stuff/depression/anxiety/chronic pain/etc: try reading it. so worth it. thanks again Toko-pa 🙏🏵️

My favourite book on Audible.

This book has become a treasured companion and I listen to it often for inspiration, meditation, reflection and even as a lullaby.
It moves me and comforts me like a warm and wise friend arriving at my door with soup and homemade bread.

Poor quality audio

The author was not taught breath control resulting in a never ending rhythm of gasps and thinly spoken words all held in a malaise like mood that had a depressing affect. Much of the content was interesting but ultimately the author is a fatalist and gives a nod to the incredible harmful new age myth that abuse or trauma are necessary part of one finding ones gifts and paths. To me this represents an unexamined need for certainty of meaning where respect for mystery and the limits of our understanding are a better fit.

This book will always remain downloaded on my device

Toko-pa’s book has become my bible and her self narrated audio version it’s song.
I cannot rate it high enough through my own inadequate words. And it’s not just for women. I gifted a copy to my neighbor and her husband READ IT FIRST!
Took-pa is tapped into a source you’ll recognize. And her astonishing, beautiful articulation not only lights the way home, but will embolden you to bravely trust that you can find it to too. I couldn’t be more grateful.

Relevant content, flawed delivery

The content of this book is very relevant to the person seeking self knowledge / improvement. The problem with this audio version is not the message, but the messenger. The author/reader gasps quite loudly at the end of every sentence, and it takes away the attention from what she is saying. I was wondering if I had turned a bit too purist on the vocal quality, so I paid attention to the other book I was listening to at that point, one of Harry Potter's books read by Stephen Fry. If I pay close attention to the sound I can manage to hear the moment when he inhales after reading a whole paragraph, but it is soft enough to be ignored. Unfortunately in this book that is not the case (for me). I would suggest to you that (GASP) you'd be better reading the text version (GASP) of this very important material (GASP). At least, listen to a sample to gauge what I'm talking about.

Pseudo belonging

I can’t get past how often she puts down ‘friends’ (ie a friend is a lovely singer, but rather than celebrating her own voice, she tears down her friend by calling it sickeningly sweet and fake — one example of many). Some insights, yes, but a lot of vilifying others rather than accepting their faults as human. People can accidentally hurt you, and not be villains.

Less about community and belonging than I wanted, more about dealing with how to feel when people you love disappoint you, and you aren’t ready to forgive them.

Deep nourishment in troubling times

I just finished listening to this absolutely fantastic book by the deeply cherished Toko-pa Turner .
It is hard to put into words what a tender and evocative gift she has woven with her luminous words and delicious voice. For hours I felt myself wrapped and held by her excellent reading, and the topics of belonging, living on this planet at this crucial moment in time, dreaming and most of the depth and breadth that make a life. Such a heartening, fortifying and just plain BEAUTIFUL book. Do yourself a huge favor, let Toko-Pa read to you.....even if you have read the book already, listen to it and blossom into a whole new appreciation of the wisdom and beauty through the tender care of her voice. ❤️❤️❤️

the power of the writer's voice

I highly recommend this audible version of this book. Listening to Toko-pa Turner's voice read her own book is something so special. Even if you bought the hardcopy, I hope you will get to experience the audible version. I was moved to tears so many times and felt deep heart connections with the lilt and subtle tones of her voice, especially when talking about deeply painful things. Hearing a book this way adds something new and totally different, almost like the power of hearing my own voice speaking my own truth.
