This is the authoritative account of an eighteen-month crisis in American democracy that will be seared into the country’s political memory for decades to come. With stunning, in-the-room detail, New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns show how both our political parties confronted a series of national traumas, including the coronavirus pandemic, the January 6 attack on the Capitol, and the political brinksmanship of President Biden’s first year in the White House.

The transition from President Donald J. Trump to President Joseph R. Biden Jr. stands as one of the most dangerous periods in American history. But as number one internationally best-selling author Bob Woodward and acclaimed reporter Robert Costa reveal for the first time, it was far more than just a domestic political crisis. Woodward and Costa interviewed more than 200 people at the center of the turmoil, resulting in more than 6,000 pages of transcripts - and a spellbinding and definitive portrait of a nation on the brink.

From June 2019 until his firing by President Trump after the November 2020 election, Secretary Mark T. Esper led the Department of Defense through an unprecedented time in history - a period marked by growing threats and conflict abroad, a global pandemic unseen in a century, the greatest domestic unrest in two generations, and a White House seemingly bent on breaking accepted norms and conventions for political advantage. A Sacred Oath is Esper's unvarnished and candid memoir of those extraordinary and dangerous times, and includes events and moments never before told.

While the world watched Donald Trump’s presidency in horror or delight, few noticed that his lifelong grifting quietly continued. Less than 40 minutes after taking the oath of office, Trump began turning the White House into a money machine for himself, his family, and his courtiers. The Big Cheat offers a guided tour of how money flowed in and out of Trump’s hundreds of enterprises, showing in simple terms how a corrupt president used our government for his benefit, even putting national security at risk.

An epic narrative chronicling the fracturing of the Republican Party, Jeremy Peters’s Insurgency is the story of a party establishment that believed it could control the dark energy it helped foment—right up until it suddenly couldn’t. How, Peters asks, did conservative values that Republicans claimed to cherish, like small government, fiscal responsibility, and morality in public service, get completely eroded as an unshakable faith in Donald Trump grew to define the party?

What was really going on around the president, as the government failed to contain the coronavirus and over half a million Americans perished? Who was influencing Trump after he refused to concede an election he had clearly lost and spread lies about election fraud? To answer these questions, Phil Rucker and Carol Leonnig reveal a dysfunctional and bumbling presidency’s inner workings in unprecedented, stunning detail.

By the time she became US Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch had seen her share of corruption, instability, and tragedy in developing countries. But it came as a shock when, in early 2019, she was recalled from her post after a smear campaign by President Trump’s personal attorney and his associates - men operating outside of normal governmental channels, and apparently motivated by personal gain. Her courageous participation in the subsequent impeachment inquiry earned Yovanovitch the nation’s respect, and her dignified response to the president’s attacks won our hearts.

When Browder’s young Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was beaten to death in a Moscow jail in 2009, Browder cast aside his business career and made it his life’s mission to pursue justice for Sergei. One of the first steps of that mission was to uncover who had killed Sergei and profited from the $230 million corruption scheme that he had exposed. As Browder and his team tracked the money that flowed out of Russia—through the Baltics and Cyprus and on to Western Europe and the Americas—they discovered that Vladimir Putin himself was one of the beneficiaries of the crime.

Description
Picking up where the New York Times best-selling Front Row at the Trump Show left off, this is the explosive look at the aftermath of the election - and the events that followed Donald Trump’s leaving the White House - from ABC News' chief Washington correspondent.
Nobody is in a better position to tell the story of the shocking final chapter of the Trump show than Jonathan Karl. As the reporter who has known Donald Trump longer than any other White House correspondent, Karl told the story of Trump’s rise in the New York Times best seller Front Row at the Trump Show. Now he tells the story of Trump’s downfall, complete with riveting behind-the-scenes accounts of some of the darkest days in the history of the American presidency and packed with original reporting and on-the-record interviews with central figures in this drama who are telling their stories for the first time.
This is a definitive account of what was really going on during the final weeks and months of the Trump presidency and what it means for the future of the Republican Party, by a reporter who was there for it all. He has been taunted, praised, and vilified by Donald Trump, and now Jonathan Karl finds himself in a singular position to deliver the truth.

Great Book | Betrayal
Another great listen Jonathan Karl!
I can’t wait until I can stop listening to books about trump! I have never ever been a trump fan, never! Even blocked friends on Facebook before he became The Republicans Guy.
But I do find it amazing how a failed, multiple failed businesses can take the attention of 10’s of millions of people and scam them and then also use loopholes in USA tax law and business law, to get away with legally not paying debts to businesses & people who worked there butts off for him! All while flying around on his big ass Jet saying he is broke/with multiple bankruptcy and he is rich, really rich in the same sentence!
Amazing!
I think trump will go down in history as the worst POTUS ever and also a one person organized crime ring!
I do feel sorry for Barron his youngest son because he is literally trapped and along for the ride wether he likes it or not!
Glad I am not American

Jonathan Karl is a great reporter
Throughly enjoyed this book. I have read or listened to many of the Trump books and this was one of the best ones! Unbelievable to me that Trump has not been arrested and in prison! What is wrong with the US judicial system that a baffoon like Trump can scam millions, become President, commit crimes while in office and apparently get away with it.
Glad to be Canadian.

Good history of trump's greatest failure
Good history of trump's greatest failure, in 2020/2021. Well written and read. Only issue I had was in the narration. My ear picked up his mispronunciation of "president," which I found distracting. I don't know if this is a speech impediment, in which case I apologize. (I also apologize if I've brought it to your attention and now you find it distracting!)

More of the Same
I actually did enjoy reading (listening to) this book. Jonathan Karl is an excellent writer and the narration was just as good. However, I did find it to be another book with chronological content. I have read many other of the "Trump" books which have said much the same thing. I may be wrong, but I feel there was very little that I did not already know. The last chapter was enlightening simply because the book was written more recently. Therefore, to be fair, this was a well-written book, and would recommend it to anyone who wants to know the full story. I don't think any other author could top this one.

A movie plot you know but still manages to impress
Having listened to only 2 books about Trump, (both focused on a particular time period) I am hardly what you would call an expert on Trump books. However I will note that it took me a single day to finish Betrayal vs. Peril which took me weeks to slog through..
Betrayal is essentially a concise & succinct blueprint for the House January 6th Insurrection committee to use in explaining to the American people in plain language the insanity of the Donald Trump administration. Literally they could just follow this book point by point. Let’s be real; there was so much insanity & chaos in the Trump administration it takes someone truly gifted to take all that & design us a simple picture. Simple is the hardest thing to make AND do well.
As someone who follows politics FAR more than the average American, Betrayal filled in gaps for me the details of things I did not understand or just did not know about. Sure I’d heard of Sydney Powell & Lin Wood, but other than the general sense they were crazy, I didn’t know the exact reasons why. The replacement of Esper w/Chris Miller & his genius handling of DJT, the WH HR managed by a nobody frat boy… there’s so much it makes the head spin. I knew Kayleigh McEnany was horrible, but Betrayal points out specifics.
Details matter. Betrayal shows exactly how much minutiae matters. This book is filled with oh so many details! Tbh this book was EVERYTHING I was hoping Peril would be. The writing is superb; detailed but not superfluous & perspective fantastic.
Every American who is eligible to vote should listen to this book. Tbh everyone regardless of voting eligibility should listen to this book! I listen to books out of practicality so I can work at the same time, but I would argue this one should be listened to vs. read as there are many audio clips from original sources that somehow makes it even more engaging.
Typically I don’t listen to books twice, but if I do, I know it’s a really excellent book. This is one of those. I’m not sure if it was the constant sense of panic for 10 hours straight, but had a super productive day working while listening to it. Thank you Jonathan Karl for writing & dictating this excellent piece!
PS. If you like this book I HIGHLY recommend The Cult of Trump by Dr. Steven Hassan. If will take more than a day to get through, but worth it.

Detailed documentation of Trump’s near overthrow of Democracy
There is starling new details of Trump’s near overthrow of a free and fair election. The effort was very nearly successful. The author is a Whitehouse Correspondent with a close and personal eyewitness to the Trump Presidency. He knows the key Trump staffers, Cabinet appointees, lawyers, and Congressional leaders. He provides supporting documentation. I particularly liked pertinent audio recordings inserted in the Audible version.

Brilliant.
Karl’s honest and nonpartisan reporting goes in depth to the key sources behind the lead up to the 2020 election, the real-time horror of 1/6, and the political aftermath they country is still enduring. He speaks with congressional leaders who were (and are) the decision makers during the most critical period in political history. At times heartbreaking but never losing an optimistic tone for the future of the United States.

Alarming In Detail
As a rule, I enjoy hearing the author as narrator. I want their genuine inflections and thoughts to breathe through the words. Jonathan Karl is no exception, his job as a reporter makes him more than qualified.
This book exposes a deep flaw in the psyche of a great number of Americans – They scream from the highest mountain tops about freedom and democracy and the Constitution, when in the end they don't want that at all - they crave a monarch.
When HB0 decides to do a 10 part docu-drama about Trump's Presidency and the attepted overthrow of democacy, I truly hope they will turn to this book as reference.

Very Well Done
Jonathan Karl does a great job telling exactly what was happening at the end of the Trump administration. I wish every American would read or listen to this book. I wouldn’t be surprised if it eventually becomes required reading in college history classes, as well as, college journalism classes. Great job on reporting a difficult time in our American History.

Required Reading (or Listening)
Jonathan Karl not only had an inside track to Trump’s presidency, he names his sources most of the time and explains why not when sources are omitted. His chilling acount of Trump in 2020 is exceptionally well documented, written, and narrated. To any person who values accurate reporting and is also considering a future vote for Trump: Read (or listen to) this book first!

Pure Honesty. Thank you
Whatever happened to pure honesty, American truth and justice. This truth needs to be spoken about again, again and again. History is written by the victors. Documenting the incidents as they occur will never let real people and our children forget the truth. Thanks for staying vigilant. Great writing and well narrated.
