À propos de cet audio
I had an ordinary life running a video store…until a ghost crawled out of the TV and gave me powers.
Our retro-tech towns might seem idyllic, yet go beyond the arcades and coffee shops and you'll reach the danger zones roamed by bionic bots. Me? I ran a video store with my cute friend Emiko. She's always been a little different, so I had to look out for her—we usually just watched movies and played games together.
One day, a suspicious pink-haired chick burst into the store, warning me not to watch a tape labeled Property of Steelheart—Do Not Watch! So obviously, I did, and a terrifying ghost crawled out of the screen.
But this isn't a horror movie. That busty ghost gave me powers! Suddenly, those no-go zones weren't so no-go after all. I could roam them freely, and destroy the bots with a mere closing of my fist, crumpling their bionic bodies like paper.
But how could I use my gift when I needed to hide it from that shady agency? And if they knew where the tape was, why hadn't they come for me already? Maybe that pink-haired agent wasn't all she seemed…

An unconventional book, but not a bad one
This is an odd book. It's set in a world that is similar-but-not-the-same-as our own, a little behind in technology in some ways (they still have MySpace and VHS tapes), ahead in others (they have lightsabers and artificial intelligence). The author likes to throw in pop culture references, changed just enough that you have to guess that 'King of the Amulets' is the 'Lord of the Rings' movies, for example. There's a lot of movie references, which makes sense given that nearly the whole book takes place in a video rental store. A video rental store in a declining human civilization, but that's not the story.
There's a plot, but it's a slow one, as you might expect from a book described as 'slice of life'. It's the characters and their personalities that drive this book forward. Luckily, the author has done a great job of making them come alive, and the duet voice actors are great at giving each their own voice and accent. From the out-of-time, happy-go-lucky ghost to the autistic gamer girl to the idealistic rebel, there are characters that you will enjoy spending time with, and that made the book worth listening to for me.
