It was the end of World War II. FDR's New Deal had redefined American politics. Taxes were at an all-time high. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had created a fear of total annihilation. The rise of secret government agencies and sanctions on business had many watching their backs. America's sense of freedom was diminishing... and many were desperate to take that freedom back.

Among them was a great dreamer, an immigrant who'd pulled himself from the depths of poverty to become one of the wealthiest and most admired men in the world. That man was Andrew Ryan, and he believed that great men and women deserved better. So he set out to create the impossible: a utopia free from government, from censorship, and from moral restrictions on science, where what you gave was what you got. He created Rapture - the shining city below the sea. But this utopia suffered a great tragedy. This is the story of how it all came to be... and how it all ended.

Any fan of Bioshock will enjoy this, Lots of backstories leading to the beginning of Rapture…Made me want to play the first game all over while listening to this audiobook!

An in depth look into the fragmented tangled web that is Bioshock.

This story ties together the vastly diverse stories of game one and two (Mostly one) and gives you the full taste of the games without the need to play them.

Books tied into video games often share the same fate as movies tied into video games, that being that they're crap. I took a shot on this one because I love Bioshock and because the reviews were good and I have say, this was a pleasant surprise. The only real bummer for me is that the page implies that there was supposed to be more than one book that never arrived.

This is really a Rapture origin story, taking place before Bioshock 1. If you've played the games, this will provide a lot of interesting context and back story for the characters you'll know, but if you haven't played the games, this will really help build up the universe you'll be entering. Even as a standalone story, it's well written and acted and helps lay out what made Rapture so disturbing and why it was desinted to be a failed idea.

This is a good light sci-fi listen and my hope is that if the new Bioshock game that's in development does well, that maybe we'll see another.
