We need more simple Black love stories <3
A lot of other reviewers gave this book 3-4 stars, and personally? I just can't understand it. People rave about mediocre love stories all the time, but suddenly want to be critical because the main characters are Black? BYE.
Anyway, this book did what it set out to do. A series of love stories between Black teens, interwoven through a few degrees of separation and set during blackout in New York City. It gave everything its white counterparts gave, but with a hell of a lot more representation! Can we talk about that please?! Everyone in this story is just so open-minded. Queerness is commonplace and talked about regularly. As a queer Black person myself, it made me so happy I did a little dance x)
The way these stories were written brought life to the page, and the characters and descriptions were so vivid I could imagine entire scenarios in my head. The fact that New York City was the background, and the blackout as a plot device were great decisions that I think would translate well on screen. If someone decides to make this a movie, I'll be one of the first people in line to see it. I would go into detail on each individual story, but I'll save that for my blog ;)
Overall, I really enjoyed the stories as standalone, and within the context of this anthology. The authors are all amazing Black women. We need more simple, cute Black love stories! Representation matters. The narrators did a fantastic job and brought life to the characters they voiced. I'll recommend this book to everyone I know in real life.
I'm happy this book exists and will definitely be buying a hard copy!

Great Summer Anthology!
I enjoyed almost all of these stories, I just wish they were in a different order, if that makes sense. I liked that they all were heading to one location and that was the "thread" for the anthology but I wanted them to either actually run into each other or some sort of closing story that brought it together. Especially since we had a "running" narrative/story between each contained story. But I really did enjoy each of the stories and think it was a great summer read!

so CUTE
super cute! I loved all the stories and appreciated the show of blk queer love. a perfect summer listen. stories are easy to follow but still hit right in the feels and I like how as you hear each story you get a glimpse of a character that was previously mentioned.

Mint chocolate ice cream on a hot summer’s eve
Delightful six pack of romance novellas mixed Love Actually style, with some stories connecting briefly through shared characters and others just sharing the same blackout moment in time. The format inserts 5 novellas between each Act of novella No 1, but it’s fairly easy to differentiate the stories given the unique narrators. This is violence free, contains just a couple of F bombs and has nothing more than kisses before fading to black.
New York, black/brown culture, and LGBTQ themes are woven into the novellas with varying success. Would a stranger really ask about a potential love interest with “is it a girl, a boy, or a non-binary person”? Do folks really talk like that?
I was only disappointed in one novella (All the Great Love Stories … and Dust), which seemed to be trying way too hard, but ended up stuck in cliches and an annoying bit repeating “footnote: the truth is…”
On the other hand, I loved novella 2 (Mask Off) and was amazed that such a tight, effortlessly woke story could unfold in a mere hour. I also appreciated that the romantic conflict stayed on the sweet, rather than angsty side. All in all, well worth the daily deal price.

Great story, great narration
What a gem. I was wary to get an audiobook version of an anthology but this book has the all the top dogs in the game whose performances are stellar. The plot, which is made of a series of intersecting short stories, is solid, though it did feel like it ended a bit abruptly. I would've liked to return to some characters a second time at the end.

Absolutely brilliant
The stories being told are from different perspectives during the same event in New York city. I love how all of these beautiful stories have been written eloquently and distinctively by all these AMAZING authors. Amazing job working together during these trying times of the world pandemic.
