Description

In Bones Would Rain from the Sky, Suzanne Clothier takes a radical new direction in understanding our life with dogs...and our mutual love. Drawing on a lifetime of experience with dogs, this nationally renowned dog trainer brings us astonishing new lessons about our animals - and ourselves. Gently, with intelligence, humor, and unfailing patience, Suzanne Clothier guides us to truly comprehend another creature's mind and heart. You will discover how our dogs see the world from their uniquely canine perspective, how we can meet their deep need for leadership without using force or coercion, and how the "laws" of canine culture often put our dogs at odds with us and our very human world. Clothier's unparalleled insights into aggression in dogs can help prevent a tragedy, including the unnecessary destruction of a pet. As in no other "dog book" or training manual, in Bones Would Rain from the Sky an extraordinary woman shows us how to find a deep connection with another being and to receive an incomparable gift: a profound, lifelong relationship with the dog you love.

How to humanely train the dogs we say we love

I related instantly to this book. It opened with a description of a dog "trainer" pinching a dog's ear to take a dumbbell. That exact situation happened to my dog by a dog "trainer" almost 40 years ago. We left that class, never returned, and refused to pinch our dog's ear.

This author meshes philosophy, science, and humanity to describe how people train and treat their animals. She is authentic and gives examples of where she fell short of her ideal self. She also vividly describes other "trainers" who, in the name of training, push and hold a dog's head under water or explain exactly how hard someone should hit their dog. (Note: they shouldn't.)

It's a great read for those who wish to present their better self to their dog, and others.

Insightful look into animal relationships

I loved this book. Although not a training manual, this book does an excellent job of looking behind our relationships with dogs and can help to explain why some training methods work or don't.

I have had amazing relationships with dogs

Demonstration of the relationships between man and dog. I have a retired service dog so have experienced a connection with her intimately for 10 years. The middle years of her life as my active service dog are impossible to describe how she knew before I did that I needed help desperately. No human in my family had any idea that I was in trouble often abandoning me in anger and disbelief. I truly believe that she could feel my need through a very bad period where she was who was my lifeline. The author describes this ability of a good dog if we just listen. My new dog is going through the same amazing learning process now.

At times tedious and repetitive

At times I feared I would never get through this audiobook. It was greatly improved by listening to it at 1.15 speed. Initially excited to delve into the writers philosophy on the canine perspective and ethical husbandry I soon lost interest with the repetitive nature of discussing each topic to ad nauseam. At times I felt it presented more as the author's autobiography with a touch of condescension. How much of this was the narrator's tone and the author's text I'm not sure but I did not find it a good match for an enjoyable listen.
