Description

"Leave it to DJ Molles to change the genre with a breakneck action novel that had me turning the pages while thinking, why the hell didn't I write this?!" (Nicholas Sansbury Smith, New York Times and USA Today best-selling author of the Hell Divers and Extinction Cycle series)

In the beginning, the gods destroyed the world.

Five hundred years later, things haven’t gotten much better for humans. The demigods that were left behind to guard over humanity have been using them as fodder for an endless civil war between themselves, and the humans just go on dutifully slaughtering each other, battle after battle.

It’s not all bad, though. Perry McGown makes his living off those bloody, stinking battlefields. He works on a crew that reclaims all the spent shell casings. They reload them into new cartridges, and then sell them in towns. It’s a good gig, it puts a few gold coins in Perry’s pocket, and best of all, no one asks too many questions about his past.

Which is ideal, because if anyone found out that he was a deserter from the war, he’d be executed for heresy.

Then some bad blood between crewmembers leads to one man with his brains dashed in, and Perry heading for the hangman’s noose. Through a flurry of gunfire and blood, Perry manages a narrow escape, but only with the help of the two people he likes least: A girl named Teran that asks far too many questions about his past; and an ex-legionnaire named Stuber, whose penchant for gleeful violence brings back bad memories for Perry.

On the run and pursued by a ruthless demigod, Perry is forced to confront the demons of a past that he thought he’d left behind him - and learn truths about himself and his family that have been buried for decades. But the more Perry learns, the more dangerous his journey becomes. Because the truth about Perry could break the gods.

Well, turned out way better than i thought

I must be honest, for the first 3 to 4 hours i kept wondering to myself "where's this going?' Give it a chance. Its a set up for a bad@$$ story.

Clumsily executed

The author has created an amazing world but unfortunately is too clumsy to make the most of it. There a huge plot holes, but the worst is when the author is trying to build tension by delayed a plot revelation- the poor writing in these situations was unbearably clumsy. I’m also not a fan of the narrators voice

Why does the author make it so hard to like the main character

Ok so this is the first time I’ve given a bad review for a book and I just got to say it is so hard to like the main character. I mean the whole point of the first hour or so of the book was to show that the MC is a tough person and knows what to do and how to not get killed yet later the MC turns into a complete fucking moron who can’t do anything without complaining about random stuff, I mean really this guys supposed to be tough and smart yet he has a tantrum every five seconds because the person who is smart and knows what to do says a mean name to him. Like come on it just gets annoying after he has a hissyfit because something didn’t go his way, and he also can’t grasp a situation. Like when shit is going down or there’s lore being told he just goes “why am I here I don’t want to do this” at one point he try’s to throw the thing hundreds of people died for because he doesn’t want to see his dad

Better than I thought

Christian Rummel saves this book. His reading was compelling enough to Get the listener past the dry suspense that is riddled through this book.

unbelievable characters not engaging

I really loved DJ Molles Lee Harden series. This book was hard to get into...lead character Perry is unlikeable and unbelievable. lengthy unnecessary descriptions of how to con a shop keeper out of 5 units.... uggh. This is a symptom of the author dragging out an uninteresting plot to several books. I am just not interested in any of the characters and it is obvious the books are just going to drag out at this annoying pace. I will be returning this book.

Mad Max meets Star Wars

Great story by D.J. as usual and Christian Rummel's performance was also great as always.

Love DJ Molles- not sure about this book

I’ve always really enjoyed Mr. Molles’ writing, it generally has a compelling story and multifaceted characters. This effort felt like writing for a YA audience. Not that I mind YA fiction on occasion, but it’s just not what I expected. Christian Rummel is terrific as always so it was an enjoyable listen- I was just hoping for more depth, nuance, and detail; the kind I’ve come to expect when reading Molles.

All in all, a strong B effort.

Not my favorite DJ Molle book

I've listened to just about everything that DJ Molle has written and loved them all. Unfortunately, this book is not my favorite by this author. It just didn't grip me. I almost gave up halfway through but kept waiting for it to get better. I think that the whiny aspect of the main protagonist did much to add to my annoyance. Then, there was the macho braggadocio by the main badass ally, with his tales of drunken revelry and battle that started to get boring after a while. Not sure if I will continue with this series.

wow - what a great sci fi book

well, this exceeded my expectations. I knew dj molles was a good author from his Lee & Angela books. I was cautiously optimistic when I started, hoping for a good book. and I got one. The narrator is the same as Mr Molles previous books, which is good. I am so used to his voicing Lee and Angela, it took me a bit to shift gears to the new characters:) Setting up the backstory, aka universe in this book took a bit. It was woven in with the story and it appears to be a complex, yet believable set of story constraints. Action is fast paced, believable, logical. The characters seem like real people - thought one quesion is how did Uncle get so accepted so quickly by the Outsiders?? just a random thought here.
I am in my car 3 hours a day. So when I find myself going out a lunch to listen to a book, I know it is a good one. And I did that until this book ended. So bring on the next one!
