After the battle of Threnody, the Seraphim and her crew are broken. Months of relentless war by the Children, a race of genocidal artificially intelligent life forms bent on taking revenge on their creators, strains every resource available to the Planetary Alliance. The fight runs the spectrum from open combat to countless subtle plots by the Children, and it's all the Alliance can do to stave off utter catastrophe.
Grant Stone and his crew are one of the thin lines standing between the Children and their goal. Stretched to their limits and beyond, they find themselves in need of time to rest and repair. For the damaged among them to heal.
To make that happen, Grant has to take on a mission with repercussions that could touch every corner of the Alliance. He has no choice - his ship and his people have been pushed as far as they can go. Plunged into a plot further-reaching than he could have imagined, Grant will have to find a way to save them all.
