Histoire
The next book in the Masters & Mages series that started with Cold Iron, from the master of fantasy Miles Cameron... Only fools think war is simple or glorious. On the magic-drenched battlefield, information is the lifeblood of victory, and Aranthur is about to discover that carrying messages, scouting the enemy, keeping his nerve, and passing on orders is more dangerous, and more essential, then an inexperienced soldier could imagine...especially when everything starts to go wrong.

Twenty-eight florins a month is a huge price to pay for a man to stand between you and the Wild. Twenty-eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders. But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men - or worse, a company of mercenaries - against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder. It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.

Histoire
A vibrant and powerful epic set against an alternate Bronze Age, this tale of gods, men and monsters, conspiracy and war, is a rich, compelling and original tale from a master of the historical and fantasy genres. The people caught up in toils of the gods are merely trying to survive. Victims of vicious whims, trapped by their circumstances or pushed beyond what the mortal frame can bear, a handful of god-touched mortals—a scribe, a warlord, a dancer and a child - are about to be brought together in a conspiracy of their own.

Loyalty costs money. Betrayal, on the other hand, is free. When the Emperor is taken hostage, the Red Knight and his men find their services in high demand - and themselves surrounded by enemies. The country is in revolt, the capital city is besieged, and any victory will be hard won. But the Red Knight has a plan. The question is, can he negotiate the political, magical, real, and romantic battlefields at the same time - especially when he intends to be victorious on them all?

Fitting conclusion
An excellent ending to an outstanding trilogy. The magic system and the world creation were well integrated. Highly recommended.

Got worse after book 1
Its an okay series. I did not really enjoy any of the characters and some characters were actually enraging. The MC rescues a beggar from poverty and the beggar repays him by banging his ex.
Its a very PC medieval world. If that is your thing then you will really like this series. Hell, the author goes out of his way to make sure he ticks all the PC boxes.
The HEMA knowledge and the general enthusiasm for medieval history definitely shows. However, the MC goes from zero to hero very quickly and then becomes annoyingly preachy. Book 3 on its own is probably a 2/5. The main female character is still incredibly annoying. Incessant swearing, zero character growth.
The magic system is terrible. Nothing makes sense. Characters get stronger somehow without any seemingly reasonable explanation.
I would not recommend the series for those who are looking for a medieval combat fantasy. Its meh on that front. Not to mention changing some words just to change them.

Just as good on the third listen
An epic fantasy series with a good plot, and good character development. It left me wanting more in the best way. Mark Meadows was excellent. One of my favorite narrations.

Great Renaissance fantasy
I love Miles Cameron; his strengths are definitely his colorful side characters, his incredible understanding and description of sword combat, and his flavorful, albeit inconsistent, magic system. I recently finished his Traitor Son cycle, where you see all of the above elements combined with a rich world, incredible history, and a master plan five books in the making.
In this series, you get all of the above, but…less of it? I feel like all the nuts and bolts are present, and you get a satisfying and fun series, but it is not the masterwork that the Traitor Son cycle is. It’s still a lot of fun, and you’ll love every moment of it. Much better than any other Renaissance/Napoleonic fantasy I’ve read.

Miles Cameron is the Best …
fantasy novelist of his generation. I’ve read 100s of fantasy novels in the last few years. Mr Cameron is the best. His Traitor Son series and this Masters and Mages series are the both in the top 5 series of the 2000s. And probably ever.
His ability to build complex multi-book plots with numerous important characters that consistently develop and evolve is second to none.
And his description of combat and magery is unparalleled. He clearly has a deep background in pre-firearm combat and warfare. His description of both one on one combat and large scale warfare is … Art…. and a reason alone to read his books.
If only he could produce a novel a month… I might be satisfied.
