Description
In Broken Harbour, a ghost estate outside Dublin - half-built, half-inhabited, half-abandoned - two children and their father are dead. The mother is on her way to intensive care. Scorcher Kennedy is given the case because he is the Murder squad's star detective. At first he and his rookie partner, Richie, think this is a simple one: Pat Spain was a casualty of the recession, so he killed his children, tried to kill his wife Jenny, and finished off with himself. But there are too many inexplicable details and the evidence is pointing in two directions at once. Scorcher's personal life is tugging for his attention. Seeing the case on the news has sent his sister Dina off the rails again, and she's resurrecting something that Scorcher thought he had tightly under control: what happened to their family, one summer at Broken Harbour, back when they were children. The neat compartments of his life are breaking down, and the sudden tangle of work and family is putting both at risk.

I love Tana French's murder squad series, though I have listened to them all out of order (though they are mainly stand alone books, I would normally read in the order they are written). Great detail in the plot, as always, but it is the intense central character that is so engaging in all her books- whether you like them or not, they pull you in. Incredible dialogue between the characters, I can't imagine how hard that is to craft...
Narrator was excellent, though at times the female voices were a bit hard to buy or too whiny (and when intended to BE whiny, perhaps too much so), but by the end of the story, the tone of the female characters had changed, or he was better, or it was so engaging I didn't notice anymore. Loved it. This and The Trespasser probably my favourite of hers.

Loved the unique story line
Enjoyed the story, great narration. Kept me wondering and wanting to read more. Interesting characters, some character voices were a bit whiny though.

Superb, Amazing, Brilliant
This was not my first Tana French novel. I had to hunt down this audible, like I called the
UK Audible became a 3 month member and still couldn’t get it because I could not get in
Canada or the US at the time. So when it became available I totally did a huge hurrah!!! I have listen to all Tana French’s books to date.
This book does not disappoint. You want a detective novel with realism and real people?
Well this is it. I am not going to tell you the story you have to judge for yourself. I love mystery/detective books and finding one that is truly superb is amazing.
The narrator is amazing, Hugh Lee. Thank for doing such a fantastic job Hugh. It made an incredible novel that much better.
Keep on writing Ms French!!!!

Brilliant book. Outstanding narrator
Tana French as always wrote an exceptional book. But it is the narrator who took it a notch up. The range of voices he can do is mindblowing. I highly recommend it.

Gripping but sometimes overacted
Perhaps one of the saddest books I’ve read in a long while, this is as gripping a read as we expect from Tana French. She’s a great writer who draws compelling characters and believable twisty plots. Lots of sub-dramas along the way. I had the audiobook and the ebook, and sometimes I found the audiobook to be overacted and I had to switch to reading. I realize it’s a fine line and different people like different levels of acting in the reading. But this felt overdone on occasion in the performing of some of the dialogue. I still loved it overall.

Make it through the first two chapters
Once you get through the first two chapters which are very pedantic character introductions the story starts to pick up speed and is very intriguing.

Beautiful writing and complex characters
I have read several books by Tana French. This was one of my favourites although rather disturbing at times. Very atmospheric ,and a wonderful performance. It was so vividly described that I felt as if I was watching a play. My only complaint is that it was too long. The same effect could have been achieved with a shorter version.

Good book, not the best in the series
wasn't the best book the series for sure but still a great story. The only point I didn't like was the narrator's version of a crying woman. It was painful to listen to. Other than that, well worth the listen.
