Don Winslow hits this book of novellas out of the park. Ray Porter always great with lots of new characters.

Let me say for the record, I love Winslow. This collection of short stories, is (at times) intense, emotional and disturbing as some of his best work, but there are a couple of the novellas that were a bit of a letdown. The first (titled after the collection) is brilliant and wonderfully performed by Ray Porter. The second is called "Crime 101" and definitely was my favourite. I could definitely see this one being made into a movie. The third one, "San Diego Zoo" is quite humorous and it's great seeing how he starts connecting characters from the first two. As for the rest, they are good but nowhere as engrossing as the first two. The whole tone of this collection is quite taxing as we're dealing with broken people. Kaleo Griffith does a good job narrating his, but you get spoiled by Ray Porter...he's that good. All in all I loved the first half, and wasn't as impressed with the last half so that's why I'm giving it 3 stars. if possible I'd give it 3.5 as the first two were just THAT good, and totally worth picking up for those.

In the final story, we get a nice big dose of delusional left-wing propaganda and disinformation. I forced myself to finish.

Really love Don Winslow, have been listening/ reading his stuff for a number of years. This book though? Not great. The broad strokes he paints with in this was pretty much unbearable. Everything was so cliche and cringe inducing. First audiobook by this author that I will be returning.
