Fantastic start into the 40K universe

This was my first take into the 40K universe and I loved it. The story does very well to introduce the characters and lore without it becoming overwhelming and the characters are likeable and the settings vast. the pace of it sometimes doesn't know what it wants. Sometimes its breakneck action that leaves you wanting more but the next chapter slows down and gives you a recap of what happened after. Other than that it was a fantastic listen that has gotten me hooked and wanting more.

A Fun Story

I enjoyed the depth of world building about the Iron Snakes. May not have been ground breaking material but it was inspiring to do the same for my own Chapter of Space Marines to give more depth in game.

On the fence about performance

Abnett's take on Space Marines. Good book, some amazing action scenes, but the narration is not my favourite. For example the first time Priad appears, the author describes his booming voice... but the narrator for some odd reason chose to give him high register.

The same as every 40K novel

Completely generic and forgettable characters. Their names are a complete blur of insignificance. Just once it would be nice for a Space Marine to stand out from the crowd of carbon copies. It also would have been a refreshing story if they had failed for a change. A draw would even be a departure from the standard 40K formula.

A bit dated, but worth a listen

Overall a good story. Some of the lore and phrasing are a bit dated, but the book is over 10 years old, so it's fitting. An interesting story about a chapter that we don't hear very much about. My only "complaint" is that some of the human characters were a bit wonky, but I definitely recommend this title overall.

Masterful

Dan Abnett strikes gold yet again - introducing us to some of the most believable, endearing, and HUMAN space marines in the Warhammer World. Hard to believe this is his first time writing Space Marines! Perfect for fans who prefer smaller squad-focused space marine novels. An excellent choice for Abnett fans. I love the Eisenhorn novels, but I think I actually like the Snakes even more!

Dan Abnett does it again

A unique space marines chapter gets a unique book written about them as we follow the leader of an elite squad of space marines through several deployments. Normally we only see a single mission in most 40k novels, while in this we get to see more of a "day in the life" take. And as a result, it makes for a very fast read/listen. And an entertaining one at that. It has a "stylised" feel to it I can't fully explain. There came a point while listening to this where everything being described seemed like something out of a kick-@$$ Genndy Tartakovsky animation, which I then started to imagine, and that made it even more awesome. But the fact that Dan Abnett wrote this should be enough of a reason to check this book out. My only complaint is that we don't get more of a feel for the entire squad, instead focusing more on their leader and their apothecary. This leads to the rest of the squad feeling somewhat samey, which is a little bit of a let down after Gaunt's Ghosts gave us such distinct characters, but it's not as egregious as other 40k books.

Better than Eisenhorn?

Great story! It was nice to have a linear story that didn't bounce from subplot or memory scapes from past to present. I am hoping for more like this and perhaps a BotS2... again... GREAT STORY.

Disappointing

SJW insert Dan needs to stick with nonmarines. Too Many little things that didn’t fit into the grand 40k timeline.

Another gem from Dan Abnett. Always wonderful stories and the most vivid, visceral combat. A masterpiece.

Superb!

One of the best WH40k novels I’ve listened to recently. Different excerpts from history of the Iron Snakes, following life of a particular Space Marine. Truly very well written - highly recommend!

fantastic

So there is a new snake fan in this hobby right here! Book is a little dry in certain spots but after listening to this id have to say the iron snakes are a very relatable chapter and that's part of what make this such a good listen. narration is good with a small hiccup here or there.
