Description

Building the Bonds of Attachment is the third edition of a critically acclaimed book for social workers, therapists, and parents who strive to assist children with reactive attachment disorder. This work is a composite case study of the developmental course of one child following years of abuse and neglect. Building the Bonds of Attachment focuses on both the specialized psychotherapy and parenting that is often necessary in facilitating a child's psychological development and attachment security. It develops a model for intervention by blending attachment theory and research, trauma theory, and the general principles of parenting, together with child and family therapy. This book is a practical guide for the adult - whether professional or parent - who endeavors to help such children. The third edition of this widely popular book will present the many recent changes in the intervention model. These include changes in both the psychotherapist's and parent's interventions. The attachment history of the adults is made more relevant. There is greater congruence between attachment theory and research and the interventions being demonstrated as well as greater reference to this theory and research.

Honest, should be required read for social workers

I wish I had read this before our first foster placement. I hope our county case worker will read this. I've recommended this book to many friends. My family has a lot to think about and discuss after reading this book.

Don't waste your time

I see a lot of positive reviews, so maybe I'm off-base in writing that I found the book to be too vague; all theory and lacking specific interventions and strategies. Lots of "we're going to help her feel accepted..." without the specific ways that was accomplished. Lots of story, which is intriguing, but not culminating in specific therapeutic practices to help the reader. I was hoping for a structured approach, that's not what you'll get in this book.

Relatable in story form

This book has helped me with relating to my foster kids. The story form is much more relatable than a "how-to" book. Great book! I will definitely refer back to this book!

Robotic narration

I couldn’t listen to the audio version. It sounded like it was being read by a robot. I’m not able to review the book at this time.

Trauma does not always leave visible bruises

This is a beautifully told story of a little girl’s traumatic early life and how she grows into the young person capable or giving and receiving love with the patience and understanding of her therapist, foster mother and case worker. This is a great case study for anyone trying to understand the deep layers of disorganized attachment style especially if they are not up for reading a text book. May be helpful if you are fostering/adopting or working in the field. I decided to listen to this book to not only understand my own attachment style due to my childhood, but to also gain a deeper understanding of the struggles children in foster care have. Highly recommend!

WOW is the only thing I can say!!!!!

If you are wondering about the effect of trauma on a young child, this book is just the thing to open your eyes. It clarified many things about my adoptive daughter. Even if you just work with angry youth, this will really help you to have the necessary empathy needed to work with these kids. It is a long book, 15 hours, but the narrative style makes it so quick and enjoyable. Please read!!!

This is my child...

the child in this book, is almost identical to my child. She was removed at 3 and suffers from PTSD & RAD. I wish we had given her the correct care when we first got her. Sometimes I feel like we did EVERYTHING wrong until therapy. But she is healing and I think this book helped me to understand her better.

Must read for clinicians or foster care

Absolutely fantastic story. Beautifully demonstrates the importance of intersubjectivity and how to care for children with RAD.

Helpful

Very helpful for someone who has had a loving and stable upbringing to understand how someone who has not feels and acts.
