Description
A terrifying enigma - with the power to destroy....
Twenty years ago Kate Maddox was a volunteer at a research centre where scientists hunted for a cure for the common cold virus. That summer Kate fell in love with a handsome young doctor, Stephen, but her stay ended in his tragic death, and Kate fled to a new life in the United States.
Now Kate is back in England and on the run with her young son, this time from her vile husband. But a chance encounter sets her on a terrifying path of discovery. What really happened at the Cold Research Unit two decades ago?
Pursued by both her estranged husband and a psychotic killer who is obsessed with his prey, Kate must fight to solve the puzzle of the past - uncovering a sickening betrayal and a truth more horrifying than she could ever have imagined.

Improbable and silly
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The thriller plot had real potential and was compelling at the start, but it ended up turning on several completely improbable coincidences--almost insultingly contrived. The love/sex writing was junior-high level smarmy (at one point the main character makes a crack to herself about the size of her soon-to-be-ex-husband's penis--really?). Characters are stereotyped, and there's a lot of melodramatic shrieking at the end ("Jack! Oh, Jack!").
What do you think your next listen will be?
Something that's written for grown-ups.
What three words best describe Antonia Beamish’s voice?
Plummy and nice.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Sadness at what the publishing industry has come to.
