Description
The Shadowhunters must catch a killer in Edwardian London in this dangerous and romantic sequel to the number-one New York Times best-selling novel Chain of Gold, from New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Cassandra Clare. Chain of Iron is a Shadowhunters novel.
Cordelia Carstairs seems to have everything she ever wanted. She’s engaged to marry James Herondale, the boy she has loved since childhood. She has a new life in London with her best friend Lucie Herondale and James’ charming companions, the Merry Thieves. She is about to be reunited with her beloved father. And she bears the sword Cortana, a legendary hero’s blade.
But the truth is far grimmer. James and Cordelia’s marriage is a lie, arranged to save Cordelia’s reputation. James is in love with the mysterious Grace Blackthorn whose brother, Jesse, died years ago in a terrible accident. Cortana burns Cordelia’s hand when she touches it, while her father has grown bitter and angry. And a serial murderer is targeting the Shadowhunters of London, killing under cover of darkness, then vanishing without a trace.
Together with the Merry Thieves, Cordelia, James, and Lucie must follow the trail of the knife-wielding killer through the city’s most dangerous streets. All the while, each is keeping a shocking secret: Lucie, that she plans to raise Jesse from the dead; Cordelia, that she has sworn a dangerous oath of loyalty to a mysterious power; and James, that he is being drawn further each night into the dark web of his grandfather, the arch-demon Belial. And that he himself may be the killer they seek.

Better than the first
I definitely enjoyed this volume better than the first. My continuing complaint is that there are ridiculous number of secondary characters. I can’t keep track of them.
There’s more to say but would require a discussion. Overall, if you liked the first, you’ll like this one as well.

Hard to connect with characters but good book
Cassandra Clare has come a long a way. Her characters are solid and her consistency is a far cry better than it was in her earlier books. There are a lot of characters, so pay attention. It’s important to know who is related to whom.
Frankly, the story is slightly convoluted so hold on. I had to start and listen to several sections over again more than once to understand what was happening. Despite my own inability to listen attentively the first time, second,. eat.al., this book is well worth it.
I so prefer the nineteenth and early twentieth century shadowhunter stories to the more contemporary ones. I find the characters richer and more likable. There is an innocence and an obvious strain to whom they want to be. The contemporary shadowhunter stories jump right into Clarey’s “know it all” attitude and the Blackthorn’s superior distaste for anyone who is not them, with very little change through the whole series. This is my honest opinion. Again, this a credit to Clare’s growth in writing development and maturity.
The only downfall is that I don’t love and connect to any character like I have in the past. Despite Clare’s freshman literary skills in the the “Clockwork” series, it was hard not to fall in love with Will, Jem and Tess. Even though, for me, I wanted to connect with James, perhaps because of his parents, the emotional connection was missing. I almost felt something for Allister and even Matthew but not completely. There are simply too many characters to feel that closeness with.

I'm glad I purchased it.
I'm really enjoying this series as a follow up to the clockwork series. Its not fast paced but rather it reminds me of a period drama on BBC thanks to the wonderful narrator Finty Williams. If you follow the other works of Cassandra Clare then you already have an idea of the fates of these characters but you want to know what happens next regardless.

Edwardian. Eloquent. Exquisite.
I know I’m a fan of the magnificent writing that is signature Cassandra Clare, but... Edwardian London, names like Cordelia, and mythical swords like Cortana... need I really say more?
⚖️ Plot: What a plot! I’m honestly floored when I see something new after so many novels, but I am never disappointed. In fact, I have even more respect for this series as this truly is her most intricate series yet.
🗺 World: I’m definitely partial to this era. The clothing, the etiquette, the personalities are all intriguing to me. But it is a highly skilled writer indeed who makes me want to live and relive in her world. And the levels of demons only escalate as we progress.
💑 Characters: James has my heart. How can he not when Will has my soul? They are honestly such beautiful characters that I dare not blink when they enter the scene. Cordelia is a sensational role model through whom I vicariously love the life of true hero. It’s wonderful to see, especially set in and era as old as this.
