I don’t usually read murder mysteries, but I enjoyed this story. The secondary characters are eclectic and interesting, adding colour to the story. I liked the plot development and the ways that we got to see into the characters. There were some plot points that I didn’t understand.

I listened to this on audio and enjoyed the narrator. She changed her voice when reading other character’s parts, which made it easy to follow as to who was speaking, regardless of the speed the book was playing.

Amature Sleuth

if you increase the speed of the narration to 1.2x the voice is tolerable.
story is ok

narration awful

TO ALL READERS:

This series starts strong. The character of Hannah has flaws which get on your nerve, says things which will make you feel like someone is constantly scraping nails on a chalkboard and cannot make up her mind. But at least this Hannah is better than the one starting book 18. Appreciate these early books, because Hannah becomes insufferable, the plots have massive holes, and the story quality gets so bad you'll think the author is out to lunch. If you like the Hallmark movies, you may not want to read these. If you are considering this series, do so at your own risk. Be prepared to suffer through MANY bad books, or give up by book 18.

Appreciate this quality while it lasts

Even though the story is predictable it’s still entertaining and I love Hannah’s cat. I read the second book in the series years ago and the first is better in my opinion

Good beginning

It was a little slow to start for me. A lot of little details that I found to be delaying the story and plot. It started to pick up soon and I really enjoyed the pacing and story. I don’t usually go for mystery but I think I’ll look for the next one.

A little slow to start but enjoyed it

I don’t know why authors create such horrible protagonists who ruin the stories completely. This would have been a mediocre mystery not bad for a casual listen but the fatphobia, homophobia ruined it. Imagine describing a person as circus tent. Ugh!

Unbearable protagonist

this is a typical cozy mystery, easy listening but kept me entertained. I really didn't care for tha narrator with the simpering girlie voices.

ok

my only complaint is I never had a pen and paper for the recipes hahaha.

fun story

the story was pretty good but the narration was not. The narrator's voice is too mature for voicing a twentysomething woman and her range was cringeworthy. From the ridiculous Male voices to the simpering women's voices.
if you can get past the narration you could enjoy the story.

Chocolate chip cookie murder has terrible narrator

Both the narrator and the story feel like a 1980's murder mystery series like Murder She Wrote or Father Dowling Mysteries.

Hanna owns a cookie shop. Not a bakery, she just seems to make cookies. Her brother-in-law is a local policeman and they introduce another policeman, where if you have seen the netflix series you know becomes a love interest later, but not in this book. A milkman is murdered, found by Hanna in his truck with a bullet through the heart. This leads Hanna to help her brother-in-law with the investigation. Of course all the investigating and solving is done by Hanna.

Characters are stock and the dialog is wooden. There is never a sense if urgency or danger. There is only ever one suspect at a time and they are quickly ruled out. As with any book written before cellphones a lot of the plot seems contrived as a simple sent picture or text message would h ave cleared up situations.

If you are a fan of the Murder She Wrote TV series you might like this. It is light, and moves along. Overall while it isn't bad, it isn't good either. I am not rushing out to find another in the series or by the author.

Feels very 1980's
