Description

From the #1 internationally bestselling author of the Cartel Trilogy (The Power of the Dog, The Cartel, and The Border), The Force, and Broken comes the first novel in an epic new triad.

“One of America’s greatest storytellers.”–Stephen King

Two criminal empires together control all of New England.

Until a beautiful modern-day Helen of Troy comes between the Irish and the Italians, launching a war that will see them kill each other, destroy an alliance, and set a city on fire.

Danny Ryan yearns for a more “legit” life and a place in the sun. But as the bloody conflict stacks body on body and brother turns against brother, Danny has to rise above himself. To save the friends he loves like family and the family he has sworn to protect, he becomes a leader, a ruthless strategist, and a master of a treacherous game in which the winners live and the losers die.

From the gritty streets of Providence to the glittering screens of Hollywood to the golden casinos of Las Vegas, Danny Ryan will forge a dynasty.

Exploring the classic themes of loyalty, betrayal, and honor, City on Fire is a contemporary Iliad, a saga that spans generations—a towering achievement of storytelling genius from Don Winslow, “America’s greatest living crime writer” (Jon Land, Providence Journal).

Really poor narrator ruins the book.

The narrator, while not the worst I've heard, leaves a lot to be desired. I assume he is quite new to the job because he reads the book with an odd cadence at times - over emphasizing some words and under emphasizing others.

He also mispronounces a few.

I absolutely loved Don Winslow's Power of the Dog series, but this story doesn't hold a candle to that and neither does the narrator.

I don't recommend the book to anyone who expects it to be of similar quality to that trilogy.

Great crime saga

My first Winslow was a great one. A sweeping crime epic full of vivid characters. The narration was brilliant, as the performance brings each of the characters to life… one of the best I’ve heard.
I shaved a star for some well worn tropes. But hey, don’t drop a dime on me, that’s how these things go. Highly recommended.

Very Mediocre

I've listened to a number of Don Winslow's books. I really liked some of them, but this one could definitely be better. Wasn't terrible, but not his best.

If you liked The Force, you will love this.

Winslow is one of the best it comes to the lethal mix of drugs, relations with the opposite sex, greed, honour, violence, family, and people making stupid decisions. The style of the story telling is very similar to The Force which is one of the best cop books ever written. Fliakos is flawless and is a perfect fit for the style of Winslow's writing.

Gripping, vivid and extremely entertaining

Another awesome novel from a master storyteller!
Bestselling and award winning author Don Winslow is without a doubt one of the best thriller writers out there. I listened to many of his books, including The Cartel, The Force, The Border, The Power of the Dog, California Fire and Life, Savages and The Dawn Patrol and I cannot recommend all these books enough.
City on Fire is as well written, captivating, gripping, entertaining and visceral as any of those mentioned above. Another unforgettable story that explodes into 1 million colors in the listeners mind thanks to the brilliant writing style, the lifelike characters and by the way mr. Winslow vividly describes every location, action and series of events.
If you like The Sopranos, The Godfather and Narcos, you’ll love City on Fire. The action opens in the mid 80s and follows the lives of some really interesting characters. I don’t want to spoil anything so I’ll only say that it’s business as usual. Beautiful women, powerful man, dangerous gangs and a lot of action.
Renowned actor, award-winning voiceover artist and talented narrator Ari Fliakos expertly and exquisitely brings to life the story and the characters of City on Fire in a top-notch performance. He is just perfect, he reads, he acts, he uses different voices for different characters, he delights and entertains the listener from beginning to end. Get City on Fire, you’ll love it! Unputdownable, dramatic, completely immersive and extremely entertaining, can’t wait for the next two audiobooks in this highly anticipated and excellent trilogy.

Don Winslow updates Homer

Odysseus has set sail from Troy. Helen, aka Pamela, is dead, or is she. In a plot twist, he's traveling with his infant son, his aged father, and several stereotype remannats of the Murphy Dog Town Irish--Odysseus wandered for ten years; in Winslow's envisioned trilogy, Danny Ryan has two more volumes to settle any remaining scores with Christopher and the Italians. Unlike Winslow's richly nuanced South of the Border the Power of theDog Trilogy, the first book in Winslow's Odyssey relies on stereotype gangsters drawn from Goodfellows, the Godfather, and other ethnic gangster movies--Even the relationships between men and women are filtered through the tropes of stereotypes--women are wives, they make love, cook and clean and depending on the gangster-husband, getting beaten. Danny's mother, Madeline, is complex, at least she has a back story, and Pamela, the stand-in for Helen and a Greenwich beauty now mobbed-up, actually reads books. If these women have any thoughts or doubts about their chosen lives, Winslow doesn't give them a voice, and they are just thrown in as reactive characters. Except for Madeline and the elusive remaining Murphy, Cassandra, we all know who she was in mythology. Her predictive inclinations are darkly hinted out as Danny, and his crew set sail, metaphorically, toward California. The bottom line, yes, the book relies on stereotypical characters. Nevertheless, like all of Winslow's books, there's violence, suspense, and some humor. Even though the characters seem to rely more on Robert DeNiro and Al Puccino than Winslow's sharp analysis, the uncertainty, the plot, and even the families kept me listening. I couldn't turn it off, And my only question is when Book 2 will appear. If Homer had serialized the Illiad and the Odyssey, his readers probably would have reacted the same. Here we get the ultimate gang war with its intrigues, revenge, blood, guts, and even a Trojan Horse, seen through Winslow's eyes. A classic story retold by a masterful storyteller.

Weak I waited this long !!

Wow I'm seriously disappointed
I hope it's the start of a trilogy like
Power of the Dog,, Cartel and The Border
I've read everything Don Winslow has written
and he's in my top 5 all time authors
But lately
between the short story book
and this I have to ask What Happened?

it never really took off and then it was over ?
just like that
no Hollywood
no Vegas
no Saga
just the war in Providence
well written and narrated
but deeply disappointed with the End? if you call it that
Definitely not worth the money or even a credit

How can this be on the best seller list? Skip it.

Poorly written, boring, hard to follow on audible due to the multitude of characters. Nothing much ever happens.
Narrator pulled it out.
So many better books about this topic.

Simply a Waste of 9 Hours

I genuinely enjoyed Winslow’s Cartel Trilogy. But City of Fire must have been written by Winslow’s ghost writer. Frankly, a very poor mob store that goes nowhere. The Narrator was good.

Good mafia novel

I should explain that the 3 star rating is based on my great admiration of Winslow. I expect a great story with remarkable characters and more. I liked this one, just not on the same level of Frankie Machine, Cartel series, etcetera.

There's no way this was written by Don Winslow

I love Don Winslow, I have read/listened to every Don Winslow book and this is simply not on the same level. This book drones on and on about nothing and there are so many characters it's annoying to try and follow. It's really a boring story, laced with moments of violence, that I usually can't tell why it's happening or whose doing what to who. None of this is helped by the narrator who has an uncanny ability to make every character sound the same, even the women sound like the men so during exchanges between multiple characters it's terrible to try and follow. Needless to say, I miss the artistry of Ray Porter the Day of the Dog cartel trilogy was a masterpiece of writing and performance. This book is just a straight-up disappointment.
