Description

A truly original psychological crime novel about a missing child and the scandal that erupts in the aftermath, brilliantly plotted with a shocking twist

She was certain it was Daisy in the flower costume....

When eight-year-old Daisy Mason vanishes from her family's Oxford home during a costume party, Detective Inspector Adam Fawley knows that nine times out of 10, the offender is someone close to home. And Daisy's family is certainly strange - her mother is obsessed with keeping up appearances, while her father is cold and defensive under questioning. And then there's Daisy's little brother, so withdrawn and uncommunicative....

DI Fawley works against the clock to find any trace of the little girl, but it's as if she disappeared into thin air - no one saw anything; no one knows anything. But everyone has an opinion, and everyone, it seems, has a secret to conceal.

With a story that feels all too real, Close to Home is the best kind of suspense - the kind that sends chills down your spine and keeps you up late at night, thrilled and terrified.

Intelligent and Suspenseful Police Procedural

I can't say enough how much I liked this first of Cara Hunter's DI Adam Fawley series. Close to Home is a great book and a really enjoyable read. I love the characters- they are realistic and not cookie-cutter cops. You can tell that these people have heart when doing their jobs. I liked the 'mixed media' style with emails and news stories inserted throughout. Unlike other reviewer(s) I didn't find the 'comments' on news stories very tedious. It's realistic and adds to the intrigue, and the Twitter campaign becomes part of the story. The central mystery kept me listening late into the night. Details brought up throughout the book all link together as the book comes to its conclusion! The narration is spot-on and realistic. I think this is an excellent book in a great series and I highly recommend.

Too much social media!!

The amount of social media in this book makes for a dull audio book. For example, the reader repeats every element of each twitter post and there are a lot of twitter posts. Also, FB posts and regular media. Probably makes for a dull book to read as well. Omit all that and it might be a decent book.

Pretty good

Not much else to add....this is a decent British police procedural; the author made an effort to include some social issues (abuse of social media and fetal alcohol syndrome are two that stand out). I did suspect that something like the "twist" at the end would be revealed, and it just seemed a bit too unrealistic.

The end justifies the means

Excellent narrators! They did a great job & had multiple voices to distinguish between all the characters.

The author uses flashbacks to fill in the gaps. I can't decide if arranging the scenes in chronological order would ruin the effect or not. Thankfully, all flashbacks related to the story.

The story. Wow. That was a bumpy ride! I didn't know who did what until the final reveal.

I bought the next book in the series as soon as I finished this one.

Riveting!!

All I can say is, wow! A true psychological thriller. The plot had tons of twists and turns, and kept me guessing up to the very surprising end. The characters were all very well developed and believably integrated into the story. A little girl goes missing and half the people in her life seem like they have motive to have killed her, told from multiple perspectives. Narration was very good but a bit hard to understand the hard British accents at times. Overall an excellent read and worthy use of a credit!
