Description

This program includes an author's note read by the author.

An unflinching investigation reveals the human rights abuses behind the Congo’s cobalt mining operation—and the moral implications that affect us all.

Cobalt Red is the searing, first-ever exposé of the immense toll taken on the people and environment of the Democratic Republic of the Congo by cobalt mining, as told through the testimonies of the Congolese people themselves. Activist and researcher Siddharth Kara has traveled deep into cobalt territory to document the testimonies of the people living, working, and dying for cobalt. To uncover the truth about brutal mining practices, Kara investigated militia-controlled mining areas, traced the supply chain of child-mined cobalt from toxic pit to consumer-facing tech giants, and gathered shocking testimonies of people who endure immense suffering and even die mining cobalt.

Cobalt is an essential component to every lithium-ion rechargeable battery made today, the batteries that power our smartphones, tablets, laptops, and electric vehicles. Roughly 75 percent of the world’s supply of cobalt is mined in the Congo, often by peasants and children in sub-human conditions. Billions of people in the world cannot conduct their daily lives without participating in a human rights and environmental catastrophe in the Congo. In this stark and crucial audiobook, Kara argues that we must all care about what is happening in the Congo—because we are all implicated.

Would be great if it had a good person reading it.

The content is really good, but it sounds like an AI robot similar to Alexa is reading to me. The reader offers no emotion and it's actually hard to follow because there is no high or lows, or even depth in the voice. I am very disappointed; considering I pre-ordered. I wish the author would read it.

Eye opening

An amazing eye opening book. Makes a person feel guilt about the new “green” agenda being pushed by the west. Our tech desires are fuelled on the backs of essentially child slave labour

A Wake Up Call

Cobalt is the stabilizing element that gives rechargeable batteries their long life. It is mined in Congo by children, bonded laborers, and artisanal miners--a euphemism for miners working under hazardous conditions for little pay and at great personal risk.

This book is stunning in the human experiences it conveys and the horrors of an industry in which all tech companies are involved and actively engaged in denying the slave conditions of the cobalt industry.

Heart breaking

I enjoyed this book a lot, very well done.

I see many reviews complaining about the narrator, and was concerned that I wouldn't enjoy the performance, but in the end I found his reading and cadence quite pleasant and enjoyed it greatly though the subject matter was painful.

Buy this book right now and listen to it. Narrator is very slow so speed it up and it will be perfect.

Eye opening…

So…. Yeah..
I knew that thing’s where bad there and well, the comfort of one is the misery of another person. But this book took it to a whole new level of perspective and details. The way it is presented, I felt i was walking with him , seeing and earring the misery of these poor people, humans like me. I really do feel so sad. Its a must. Great book

Interesting read

The author, echoing the missionaries of the early 20th century, exposes in detail the exploitation that the Congo and its inhabitants undergo to meet the "needs" of the rich countries. His stated objective is to highlight this situation in hope that it changes.

The book is very well written and the author's journey interesting to follow. The audio version is very good. One can only hope that he is right and that it will open the eyes of the world. Personally, however, I remain sceptical that it will achieve this...

The many "artisans" interviewed say they survive thanks to God, ultimately they are probably right to believe more in him than in man in view of their life on this earth. This book, in the end, comes accross as a pretty large nail in the coffin of secular humanism...

truth is brutal

I've seen the villages nearby, I can't begin to applaud the with Siddharth has done. Thank you for your work, I hope that people listen, not just check a block and donate two dollars. Throwing charity at it won't fix this. This is a major systemic issue that needs actual focus and support. I spent 15 months near the border, the amount of human destruction, mangled limbs, scars, and shredded flesh 😔

Courage

Siddharth courageously investigates one of the most shameful aspects of our addiction to technology for the sake of it. For the Congolese little has changed since King Leopold, except that their masters are now Asian. Lumumba was wrong about the "West": he forgot that greed and the complete disregard toward fellow humans being are universal and have nothing to do with origin, race or political system.

Heart wrenching and enlightening

The honest truth of the exploitation of the African continent’s people and resources.
A dark subject not looked into nearly enough.
Through the brutality and hardships that exists in developing countries we are allowed to live our easy lives.
Colonialism and the harsh reality of what goes into keeping things status quo.

Heart wrenching

Although this book brought tears to my eyes, it was written beautifully and illustrates the horrors of artisan mining in the DRC. It’s a harsh reality that everyone should know about as I write this review on my smartphone. We all play a role in these atrocities , though indirectly . Siddharth Kara is a voice for the forgotten people of the cobalt belt.

Very Enlightening - and Extremely Brave

It's gut-wrenching to hear of the impact that cobalt mining has on the groups of people portrayed in this book. To sit here listening to an Audiobook - on a smartphone - and have to cope with the realization that the demand for technology in the developed world is causing the outsourcing the brutal treatment of others to these extreme levels is horrible. Thank you so much to the very brave individuals that helped to get this information heard, and even more so to those that risked so much by speaking with your team.

Devastating Truth

I’m devastated. Yet I’m typing this on my iPhone and am not sure I’ll stop using it. I’m a heart sick hypocrite I guess. But I’m so glad I listened to this book, and am ready to advocate for change. Thank you Siddharth Kara for putting your heart and soul into this book on behalf of the people of Congo and the Copperbelt - and all of us who would never sign off on these abuses. We deserve better from Apple and Tesla and others. The people of Congo deserve so much better - life in all its fullness. May the sequel be conducted by thousands of bloggers and podcasters who conduct interviews with Silicon Valley elites and uncover the ugly truth being perpetrated here at home to make this nightmare possible. We are all responsible.
