Description

Brace yourself for a scorching new series from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Karen Rose, where San Diego means sun, surf, sand…and serial killers.

Sam Reeves is a kindhearted psychologist who treats court-ordered clients. After one of his patients—a pathological liar—starts revealing plausible new details from a long-unsolved serial murder case, he’s compelled to report anonymously to the SDPD tip line, though his attempts to respect patient confidentiality land him facedown and cuffed by the aggressive (and cute) Detective McKittrick.

San Diego homicide detective Kit McKittrick loves the water. She lives on a boat, and when she’s not solving crimes with the SDPD, she’s assisting her foster sister with her charter fishing business or playing with her poodle. But there’s nothing that intrigues Kit more than a cold case, so when an anonymous caller leads her on the path of a wanted killer, she’s determined to end the decade-long manhunt.

Sam is soon released but goes home with both a newfound distaste for the SDPD and a resolve—not unlike Kit’s—to uncover the truth. Kit and Sam repeatedly butt heads in their separate investigations but are forced to work together to find one of the deadliest serial killers the city has faced in years.

Ummmm…. Mixed bag

Narrator was great EXCEPT main male character sounded like a 14 year old with marbles in his mouth. All the other voices were great but cringed every time he “spoke” - so hard to listen to. Story was OK. Medium to low suspense and action. No romantic sparks - male character too emasculated. Lovely backstories and characters. I’ll buy the kindle version of future books in this series.

A captivating mystery!

Detective Kit McKittrick was motivated to join the police force after a personal tragedy. She’s dedicated her life to bringing killers to justice, so when a tip comes in that leads them to the body of a teenage girl she’s determined to find the person who called in the tip. Either he knows more about the killer or is the killer himself.

When Sam Reeves patient’s claims hint at him being a killer he doesn’t know how to tell the police without jeopardizing his career with patient confidentiality laws in place. However, Sam can’t live with himself if there’s someone in danger and he doesn’t do something about it. Little does he know that his tip with lead to him being a suspect.

In her heart Kit doesn’t think Sam is a murderer, but she doesn’t want to let her personal feelings dictate her investigation. While the police are somewhat mollified when he tells his side of the story he’s still under suspicion, and he doesn’t quite trust the cops, so Sam decides to do some of his own investigating. He’s actually good at it and ends up helping the police. I liked that Sam was smart about his situation and made sure to have backup and someone with him to corroborate his activities while still being under scrutiny from the police.

There’s a definite connection/attraction between Kit and Sam, but the investigation is the primary focus. I really liked both Kit and Sam! With the way things are left I’m hoping for more in the coming books.

Cold Blooded Liar was a captivating mystery! Karen Rose balances the personal aspects of her characters with a tight, page-turning plot! There were plenty of suspicious characters. It kept me on my toes trying to figure out the killer was!

I alternately read and listened to an audio version of Cold Blooded Liar narrated by one of my favs, Hillary Huber. I love her smooth, rich voice and her performances of both female and male characters! I listened at my usual 1.5-1.75x normal speed.

I wanted to love it....or even like it

I love Karen Rose, she's usually an auto-purchase author for me. But this one, I honestly wish I could have returned it.
The narrator made Sam sound so weak and at times it sounded like his voice was wavering or even breaking - I just couldn't... Not the kind of man I would even imagine Kit would be attracted to. Maybe I should have read the book instead of listening to it.
I ended up skipping many chapters to get to the end just to find out who was the "bad guy."

Grate Story

Loved the storyline and couldn’t stop listening until I completed the story. I enjoy listening to Hillary Huber has a narrator but, I would like to suggest having a male narrator added for the next series.

Good Start to series.

I listened to this while I was out and about. As usual I got to the point that I could not stop. I just kept it on. I really enjoyed this new beginning. I wasn’t so sure about Sam at first because he’s no alpha. Kit is more of an alpha. Took me a bit to really appreciate him. A friend reminded me they all can’t be alphas. I struggled a bit with the narrator doing Sam.

This story was twisted and dark. And man what a gif punch at the end. I’m looking forward to what’s next in this series.

Very interesting story

I thought this was a great suspense story. I didn't have any idea of who the killer was. Hopefully, there will be another book to explore the relationship between Kit and Sam. Hillary Huber was a great narrator.

I was a bit disappointed

The story was great as usual. Evildoer=unexpected.
It was the 2 protagonists storyline that left me unsatisfied so I’m hoping to see them in next SanDiego book. But the character development= excellent.
The writing smooth. Scary.
I re-read all of Karen Rose’s novel so I’m hoping by then I will be more settled.
I didn’t like Sam’s voice it sounded too immature for a full grown man. I don’t usually criticize Ms Hunters narration but this didn’t fly with me

But I do highly recommend this book even with my 4.5 less than perfect rating

Different and I Appreciate That

What other reviewers have said about this book being different than Ms Rose's other books is true. Whether you will like that or not is going to depend on your own tastes. For myself, I appreciated that she tried something out of her normal formula. I also thought she did a much better job than some other books I've read that tried following this pattern. It felt much truer to life rather than forced conflict and romance. I thought the book was the right length for the story and look forward to reading more of the story of all of these characters in the future.

Narration is always a matter of preference. Ms Huber did well with the voices for the women characters. When a woman performs male voices, I just expect something reasonable and most importantly that I can distinguish between the characters. She accomplished that and more, so I give her 5 stars.
