Have you ever come across those stories with heroes who knew just how to get things done?
The ones who were masters in five different martial arts, and knew ten ways to skin a bear after killing it with their bare hands?
Yeah, that wasn’t me.
Hell, I had trouble asking a girl out on a date.
But someone in clerical must have made an error. Because I got ripped from an airplane on my way home after my last day in the Coast Guard.
I mean, come on, I wasn’t even in one of the hardcore branches of the military or anything!
On top of that, as soon as I arrived in this new world, I got sent to jail and conscripted.
So, that was fun.
But I found out I was unique. The first human on Camaria to have an affinity for all three of the elements humans had taken from the dungeons.
Fire, Earth, and Water.
Now, I’m being sent to this academy. It’s a place to learn how to be the hero they expect — no, the hero they need me to be. To save humanity and all the other races I guess.
I mean, we all have to start somewhere, right?
Oh, and there is this girl. Okay, maybe more than one…
Anyway, this is my journey. The chronicles of how I went from Mr. Average to the most powerful Hexinblade this world has ever known.

The good: There's an emphasis on plot and worldbuilding that takes precedence over building the harem or sex scenes. You could genuinely enjoy this book as a fantasy novel without the sex - and that's a good thing! The plot itself is dark, with a feeling of despair as humanity is pushed to the brink of extinction. The main character is a discharged coast guard sailor - not a grunting alpha male, but also not a pushover. Unique to him, and central to being able to someday turn the tide against the Shadows, is his affinity for not just one of the three magics of humanity, but all three. While he's occasionally a bit much, his sense of humour makes it hard to take offence at anything he says. One of the recurring jokes is the main character's own memories of the Isekai genre, which turns into a kind of meta-humour that most readers of this kind of book will enjoy. The other characters in the book are likeable enough, and - rare for a haremlit book - the other men in it aren't all caricatures of villains. The women in the harem all get their own scenes, as well, sometimes repeating the same scene we've already seen but from a new angle.
The bad: The actual premise for the harems isn't terrible - what's left of humanity has embraced sex and harems for the Hexinblades as a desperate chance to survive - but the execution is. Only one woman joins the harem in this book, but it's made explicit that at least two others will be joining in very soon. The first woman falls in love with our main character as soon as she meets him due to her memories of the future, and the second (?) is a tsundere who's just incredibly aroused by him (and his uncharacteristic treating other people as equals). Another issue is the narrator; while Aurora Bliss speaks well, it's sometimes hard to tell the difference between the female cast.
In this case, though, the good far outweighs the bad; I've already bought the sequel.
A good start to a series!
