Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. The Creative Act is a beautiful course of study that illuminates the path of the artist as a road we all can follow. It distills the wisdom gleaned from a lifetime’s work into a luminous reading experience that puts the power to create moments—and lifetimes—of exhilaration and transcendence within closer reach for all of us.

There are few creative acts more mysterious and magical than writing a song. But what if the goal wasn't so mysterious and was actually achievable for anyone who wants to experience more magic and creativity in their life? That's something that anyone will be inspired to do after listening to Jeff Tweedy's How to Write One Song. Why one song? The idea of becoming a capital-S songwriter can seem daunting, but approached as a focused, self-contained event, the mystery and fear subsides, and songwriting becomes an exciting pursuit.

Playing music should be as simple and natural as drawing a breath, yet most musicians are hindered by self-consciousness, apprehension, self-doubt, and stress. Before we can truly express our inner self, we must first learn to be at peace and overcome the distractions that can make performance difficult. Kenny's remarkable work deals directly with these hindrances, and presents ways to let our natural creative powers flow freely with minimal stress and effort.

Twenty-seven-year-old rapper, songwriter, and producer Russ walks his own path, at his own pace. By doing so, he proved that he didn’t need a major label to surpass over a billion streams on Spotify/Apple Music, sell out arenas across the US and around the globe, and become one of the most popular and engaged rappers right now. His method was simple: love and believe in yourself absolutely and work hard no matter what. In this memoir, Russ inspires listeners to walk to their individual rhythms.

Dylan, who began working on the book in 2010, offers his insight into the nature of popular music. He writes over sixty essays focusing on songs by other artists, spanning from Stephen Foster to Elvis Costello, and in between ranging from Hank Williams to Nina Simone. He analyzes what he calls the trap of easy rhymes, breaks down how the addition of a single syllable can diminish a song, and even explains how bluegrass relates to heavy metal. These essays are written in Dylan’s unique prose. And while ostensibly about music, they are really meditations on the human condition.

We may not realize it as we listen to the soundtrack of our lives through tiny earbuds, but music and all that it encompasses is disappearing all around us. In this fable-like story, three musicians from around the world are mysteriously summoned to Nashville, the Music City, to join together with Victor to do battle against the "Phasers", whose blinking "music-cancelling" headphones silence and destroy all musical sound. Only by coming together, connecting, and making the joyful sounds of immediate, "live" music can the world be restored to the power and spirit of music.

A self-described orphan with parents, Bobby Hall began life as Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, the only child of an alcoholic, mentally ill mother on welfare and an absent, crack-addicted father. After enduring 17 years of abuse and neglect, Bobby ran away from home and - with nothing more than a discarded laptop and a ninth-grade education - he found his voice in the world of hip-hop and a new home in a place he never expected: the untamed and uncharted wilderness of the social media age. In the message boards and livestreams of this brave new world, Bobby became Logic.

Description
Grammy Nominee
This unique, boundary pushing audiobook features original music by Questlove and members of The Roots with vocal guest appearances from Fred Armisen, Tariq Trotter, Dion Flynn, Robin Thede, “Suga” Steve Mandel, Norm MacDonald, Ludo Lefebvre, and Molly Kelley.
Questlove - musician, bandleader, designer, producer, culinary entrepreneur, professor, and all-around cultural omnivore - shares his wisdom on the topics of inspiration and originality in a one-of-a-kind guide to living your best creative life.
In Creative Quest, Questlove synthesizes all the creative philosophies, lessons, and stories he's heard from the many creators and collaborators in his life, and reflects on his own experience, to advise listeners and fans on how to consider creativity and where to find it. He addresses many topics - what it means to be creative, how to find a mentor and serve as an apprentice, the wisdom of maintaining a creative network, coping with critics and the foibles of success, and the specific pitfalls of contemporary culture - all in the service of guiding admirers who have followed his career and newcomers not yet acquainted with his story.
Whether discussing his own life or channeling the lessons he's learned from forefathers such as George Clinton, collaborators like D'Angelo, or like-minded artists including Ava DuVernay, David Byrne, Björk, and others, Questlove speaks with the candor and enthusiasm that fans have come to expect. Creative Quest is many things - above all, a wise and wide-ranging conversation around the eternal mystery of creativity.
Ce que les critiques en disent
"[Questlove] produces a quirky audiobook, which he delivers in a lively baritone voice. He doesn't hesitate to break into song, act a part, or, if the situation calls for it, pull out his cell phone and call a friend for the correct pronunciation of a name - while still recording. He even does what most audiobooks fail to do, include sound clips of the music or sounds he discusses. Both a solid guidebook on creativity and a memoir on Questlove, this audiobook is also a lot of fun." (AudioFile)

Quest is Fire
This book was amazing! I absolutely loved it! Well-written, lots of interesting anecdotes and very encouraging. Even for those who are not artist-types (like myself), it gets you thinking about how you can be creative in other aspects of your life, such as work, relationships, hobbies, etc. I am so happy it was narrated by the author because it comes across as authentic, plus he has a great speaking voice. It reads very "modern renaissance" in terms of combing creativity with music, food, art, etc. I can't say enough great things about this book, I can't wait to read it again and I have recommended it to many people. My favourite story was the DJ anthology for a certain VIP (BO), that was the best! Questlove seems to have had an amazing journey so far and I look forward to reading and hearing more in the future. Thanks Audible for having this in your library.

LOVED QUESTLOVE’S Creative Quest!
I’ve been a long time fan of The Roots and an even bigger fan of Questlove’s, marveling at his crazy work ethic and creative Life.
This book made me realize what an amazing teacher he is as well. It felt like I had attended a semester of his class.
This book encapsulates and explains the struggle every creative faces, in so many mediums, so brilliantly, and then positions it within the greater context of Life.
Having watched and studied creative people for his entire career, he truly is a Sensei.
Thank you, Amir! Will be listening to (and reading the book) again whenever I need a hit of inspiration!

Questlove once again is my fairy godmother
No matter what kind of creator you are, or even if you think you aren’t one at all, this audiobook will be an absolute joy from start to finish. Questlove is engaging and beautiful spoken, and really puts words to so many concepts you’ve probably attempted to understand but have never written down in any way. It’s beautiful, concise, researched, and cause for real thought and pause. It’s not a shitty self help book, it’s like a massively life changing conversation with a really damn smart friend.

false advertising
Narrated by: Fred Armisen and Norm MacDonald, huh? I must have missed that part.
After reading the description and narrated by section, I figured this audio book would contain a few interview style conversations with the other people listed besides questlove and be more of broad exploration of creativity from several sources. It is not. It is purely Questlove and Questlove alone. And although he does approach the topic from several different angles, he mostly examines it through the arena of music and drumming. And that makes sense given the author, and had I known that, I probably would have passed on the book, as I'm kind of indifferent to him and Roots as musicians. However, since I mostly got the book as a fan of comedy and was looking forward to heard Fred and Norm discuss their thoughts on creativity, I was extremely disappointed and feel as though this was falsely advertised.
In short, if you are a Questlove/Roots fan, you'll probably love this book. If not, you may or may not. But it is definitely not a multi-narrator book.

Impressed!
this is the first review i am writing, although ive listened to hundreds of audiobooks, by artists, about art, life, experiences and such.
first, i am not a fan of Questlove, or the Roots, so i am not familiar with their work, and am not biased in my review. i am a New York City career artist (art-jewelry and sculpture), one of the few around these days, so i know how hard it is to be a pro artist, and continue to thrive and love the work you do. Questlove's insight-fullness, and awareness to his and others' work, and work habits/rituals/lifestyle, and most importantly MINDSET, really resonate with my own experiences in the creative arts. good, solid advice, that any creative, or non-creative person could learn from. i highly recommend the read, for anyone who has art, or an artist in their life.
i was supposed to be introduced to Questlove some years back from a friend in the music industry, because in his words, "Questlove is prolific in his vision and creativity, so you guys would collaborate well". now, after this book, i completely understandwhy my friend said what he did, and regret not being able to meet him based on my timing at that point in time.
as im sure Questlove would agree, we will meet when the time is right, and the most important thing is to continue creating, sharing, and doing what you do, and enjoying it! from there, the people who matter and appreciate the work and the vision will find you somehow. the universe has a way of making things like that happen!
bravo, to Questlove, for opening up and sharing such personal and profound words of wisdom, regarding art and creativity with the world!
now i will go and listen to some of the music, as i did not want that to influence my thoughts on the book.

A Creative Experience
I have read other creativity books but nothing quite like this. At least not in this perspective. Quest delivers real life experiences, challenges & scenarios which he encountered in his personal life and his career as a musician. Quest using these stories to help you develop a tool to think outside the box when we tend to stay within the lines of our own better judgments when it comes to creativity. The bonus of this book is that its flooded with stories of some of your favorite musicians, producers, actors, etc. Overall a great read and absolutely a must read if you're looking for another point of view on how creativity works. Great Job Quest!

Just finished it. About to hit play again.
Loved everything about it. Well thought out and well executed.. its a joy to listen to. Quest Love puts his thoughts and experiences out there in a way that felt like I was having a conversation with a fellow creative (albeit more experienced and more thoughtful than most). I really liked the personal experiences he cites and didn’t find it difficult at all to make connections to my own creative endeavors. The book is honest and personal and simultaneously full of useful tips that any creative will be able to make use of.

think it was a good listen overall. some tools and stories were excellent listen and overall the book was motivational too. but the narration was boring at times. it was interesting to hear the writer read it out and seemed raw and real but that very reason caused it to be cumbersome and monotonous to listen to

I have read/listened to a lot of books on creativity. This is unique. Don't miss it. Thank you Questlove wish I was on the east coast and could also take a class in person.

Interesting but annoying
I could not wait for this book to end. What Questlove has to say is actually quite interesting and helpful. He explains the journey he’s had as an artist and his tune with The Roots, which makes the book a bit autobiographical. He also pulls a lot of examples from not only music but art, comedy, writing, and other artists, which I really appreciate, but JESUS CHRIST was it annoying to listen too. There are times when he’s speaking and it sounds like he’s making it up as he goes and doesn’t know what to say next. There are also times when he mumbles under his breath about something not really related to what he’s talking about, but you can barely hear him so it doesn’t really matter anyway. Quest also keeps randomly plugging The Roots music throughout the entire book, and while it’s good, it’s INCREDIBLY distracting and goes on for way too long. The last 10 minutes is all about how he came up with the artwork for the cover but I have no idea how it happened because The Roots were playing at the same volume as his voice. Maybe there’s a reason for why he chose to plug music where he did that I didn’t catch but to me, it was incredibly random. I mean in the middle of a sentence, 2/3rds of the way through a chapter with no reference to The Roots, music, Jimmy Fallon, nothing that I can think of, for 30 seconds - 5 minutes at a time. And lastly, the MOST annoying part is the stupid echo effect he uses on his voice. From time to time it makes sense, but there are plenty of times that it doesn’t. There’s a chapter where he uses the echo effect for the last 2 minutes of it.
The content of the book is pretty good and it was interesting for the most part but the performance was so hard to get through. There were times when I was literally yelling in the car, begging for Questlove to hurry up with the music or knock it off with the echo effect. If you’re deciding between reading and listening, I’d go with reading.

For those already in the creative realm I could not recommend anything better
Hey, yeah first time reviewer yada yada
This book deserves the full five star, Questlove might not put full weight in the star ratings but he deserves them.
First off he read it, you might not think that’s a big deal but means more to me coming from him. It’s read well and at great quality
The content is superb, I’m not a new guy just getting into the creative world, so many of the concepts and ideas I’ve come across from one mentor or another, but he has put them together for you right up front with stories and experience to back them. I certainly wish I had all of this years ago! And I hope others can take a listen, learn and grow from it as well.
Keep up the great work Questlove, now off to find more if your books!
