À propos de cet audio
Press play on this funny, sexy short story about rival true-crime podcast hosts forced to play nice and work together when, in reality, all they want to do is kill each other.
Emery Thompson hates Calvin Chamberlain. From the way he acts like he’s better than everyone to the way he moves through the world thinking his podcast is the cream of the crop, every little thing about the man gets to him. Even that dashing, oh-so-confident smile. He’d rather be caught dead than be around the man any longer than necessary—or admit that last part out loud.
Calvin Chamberlain hates admitting defeat. It’s hard enough losing sponsors for his historical crime podcast while obnoxious pop-culture ones like Emery’s only gain more, so it’s a particularly cruel twist of fate when a late fan’s request for a collaboration with Emery lands in his lap. He’s in no position to turn down the plea, and with no way out, Calvin reluctantly agrees.
But keeping things purely professional turns out to be a challenge when these two make it to the studio. Their chemistry crackles through their microphones, and soon, their numbers begin to skyrocket. Can these two make a killing off what they once thought was a death sentence—and more importantly, will Calvin and Emery give into the heat of passion?

I was grateful for the telling.

I love an Audible Original story; this one was perfectly light-hearted to listen to while walking this week!
Jack Harbon creates a fun story with Calvin and Emery - two rival podcasters, both focusing on true crime but with very different styles. Calvin deep dives into crimes with seriousness, pushing himself to highlight the justice system with police brutality in particular. Emery uses humour, wit and sass to entertain his listeners, while trying to bring an empathy for the victims and their families of senseless crimes. The dual narrators, Kevin Free and Ron Butler, do a fantastic job at making Calvin and Emery come to life, with a chemistry that made me believe their connection. The sound effects used helped to make the story feel immersive (such as podcast intro music or audience clapping), and I really enjoyed the way Harbon incorporated clips of their collaborative podcast, giving a second sort of story about the true crime they were highlighting. Opposites definitely do attract, and although Emery and Calvin seem to fall quickly (partially due to the novella length), it didn’t feel underdeveloped. I could’ve used a bit more steam; this definitely fell into the closed-door category, but the connection that Emery and Calvin developed was so well done. Add in the dash of humour, the banter, and the discovery of the sense of belonging Calvin (and Emery, to a degree) was missing, create a winning story.
Crimes of Passion is a story of misperceptions, confidence, hard work, and community. It is a quick light listen that I would love to see expanded with more of Calvin, Emery and their collaborative podcast again.
A lighthearted and funny story
