I picked up Cruel Obsession in both audio and KU for a reading immersion experience. The audiobook is duet-style, which I always appreciate, and the narration was nicely done by Conner Goff and Addison Barnes.
This was a short but decent mafia romance with plenty of spice. However, I strongly recommend checking the trigger warnings—this one leans into the darker side of the genre with heavy BDSM elements. If that's your thing, you'll probably enjoy the intensity, but if not, it might not be the best fit.
That said, there wasn't much originality here. It's a standard mafia romance with all the expected tropes—an arranged marriage, a ruthless don, and a heroine fighting against her circumstances. I always go into books with an open mind, especially when trying a new author, but this one just didn’t stand out. The characters lacked depth, and the story was overly predictable.
My biggest issue was the constant repetition at the beginning of each chapter. Switching POVs is great, but I don’t need to hear the exact same lines restated from the other character’s perspective—it got old fast.
If you’re looking for a quick, dark, and steamy mafia romance, this delivers on spice. But if you want more depth and originality, this might not be the one.
