Loved this book! Lots of twists and turns. Unexpected outcomes! Each character so unique. Story was easy to follow and was described so well. One of the best books I have read.

This by far has been my favourite audiobook ever!
The length was a bit off putting at first but I am so glad I committed to listening.
The storyline was incredible. I listened to it twice and each time for many hours at a time. It was hard to turn off.

I really enjoyed this book. It was unpredictable and unusual with many unexpected incidents. Brilliant book by this author.
I also enjoyed the narrator. Very clear beautiful voice and kept you interested. Loved all the voiced and was a delight to listen.

What a book!

This Kerry Barnes story portrays criminals as romantically as possible. 'Kelly Raven' - a 15-year-old who has been physically/mentally abused by her religious zealot mother - flees to London after unintentionally murdering an attempted rapist and becomes a member of a "family" of criminals.. finally treated with love for the first time in her life. Her estranged scumbag criminal father - newly released from a 12 year stint on a murder conviction - tracks her down (now a 21-year-old criminal miscreant in her own right).. loaded with venom & family secrets. The Kelly character is smart, gentle, loyal, brave, morally flawless, and worthy of support - but unrealistic and incongruous (a somehow reluctant but violent pugilist; a virtuous angel but utterly without conscience). Simultaneously, Barnes depicts professional thieves, prostitutes, and drug dealers as paragons of society (with a few sociopathic exceptions) & police officers/prison officials as almost invariably uncaring, unapologetically corrupt monsters (described as "The Filth" by Kelly's prison friends and underworld compatriots).
The manipulation of reality could be forgiven - given the author's need to create empathy to forward her plot - but Barnes goes overboard. I struggled but couldn't get past her over-the-top ludicrous biases.

As to presentation: Annie Aldington is a fantastic narrator - but struggles to deliver Jamaican patois even close to authentic. Her grasp of Cockney/Eastender accents is spectacular, but the ethnic variations inherent in the text are an unreachable challenge for her. Still - overall - QUEST Audio did well in casting this project.

Altogether, 'Cruel Secrets' merits 4 stars out of 10. If you download this audiobook and listen while driving, be careful.. it's hard to watch the road while your eyes are rolling. It wasn't a great way to spend a couple of quiet afternoons even for free.. if you pay a Credit for it you're a fool.
