Description

She is hunting for the truth, but who is hunting her?

Freelance journalist and single mother Hannah Weybridge is commissioned by a national newspaper to write an investigative article on the notorious red light district in Kings Cross. There she meets prostitute Princess and a police inspector in the vice squad, Tom Jordan.

When Princess later arrives on her doorstep beaten up so badly she is barely recognisable, Hannah has to make some tough decisions and is drawn ever deeper into the world of deceit and violence. Three sex workers are murdered, their deaths covered up in a media blackout, and Hannah herself is under threat. As she comes to realise that the taste for vice reaches into the higher echelons of the great and the good, Hannah realises she must do everything in her power to expose the truth...and stay alive.

Inferior Thriller. Over-the-top Narration.

The premise behind this Mystery-Thriller is promising: an investigative reporter finds herself entangled in a conspiracy involving a series of brutal prostitute murders.
Ann Coates provides excellent description, a plot with plenty of suspects, and a (mostly) nice pace - but her protagonist ('Hannah Weybridge') is distinctly unlikeable, other characters & suspects are two-dimensional, motivations for everyone make zero sense, the climax arrives abruptly, and the conclusion is ludicrous. I don't trust Coates's writing skills enough to continue with this particular series.

Reader Joan Walker contributes to my "meh" assessment of the book. Her diction & pacing are professional, her timbre & cadence are commendable, and her tone is interested and emotive - but her voice-acting is melodramatic, cookie-cutter, and cartoonishly enthusiastic. Audible Studios Inc could have cast this project far better.

Altogether, the recording wasn't a complete waste of time, I suppose. I enjoy books in this genre and 'Dancers In The Wind' was included as a 'Plus' option. It was a reasonable distraction for a couple of quiet afternoons for "free". Should they ask for a Credit, however, this 4/10 star offering isn't worth it.

[Incidentally: The review commenting on the frequency of vomiting in the story is hilariously accurate]
