While I really enjoyed Book 1, it felt like it was mostly about setting up the next books. In this one, the protagonist hits her stride, the humour is better and the story less predictable. As always, the supporting characters are colourfully sketched and the Nebraska landscape is beautifully described. I also enjoyed the author's explanations about why and how things are done and found myself rethinking some of my assumptions about that part of the world, whether it is farming, policework or simply lifestyles. The narrator's performance is as outstanding as it was in the first book. The only thing I found a little less enjoyable were the (to me) drawn out "action sequences", as shorter versions would still move the story along and leave more room for more character development or dialogue.
