NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The “dark comedy with a creative twist” (Miami Herald) that introduced America’s favorite serial killer—the character that inspired the latest Showtime hit series Dexter: Resurrection.

“A macabre tour-de-force.”—The New York Times Book Review

Meet Dexter Morgan, a polite wolf in sheep’s clothing. He’s handsome and charming, but something in his past has made him abide by a different set of rules. He’s a serial killer whose one golden rule makes him immensely likeable: he only kills bad people.

And his job as a blood splatter expert for the Miami police department puts him in the perfect position to identify his victims. But when a series of brutal murders bearing a striking similarity to his own style start turning up, Dexter is caught between being flattered and being frightened–of himself or some other fiend.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"A macabre tour-de-force." —The New York Times Book Review“A dark comedy with a creative twist.”—The Miami Herald“Dark and devious. . . . . Daring and unexpectedly comedic.” —USA Today"Maybe the first serial killer who unabashedly solicits our love." —Entertainment Weekly"With chills like these, you can skip the air-conditioning." —Time"One of the most likeable vigilante serial killers in recent thriller literature." —The New Yorker“Demonology has a dastardly new darling.” —The New York Times “Just when you think (hope?) that the tired and rarely credible device of the serial killer next door has hit a wall, along comes a writer like Jeff Lindsay to prove you wrong. . . . So enjoyable.” —Chicago Tribune“Mordantly funny.” —The New York Post“A fresh, inventive slice of crime fiction that turns the axis of good and evil . . . upside down. A psychological thriller in the best sense of the genre.” —The Sun-Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale, FL)“A memorable debut with a hero who really ought to be in a mental institution, but is too much fun to lock up.” —The Rocky Mountain News (Denver, CO)“Dexter’s captivating, first-person account is a genuinely exciting read.” —Time Out (NY)“This ghoulish, fascinating tale . . . will grip readers and make a lasting impression.” —The Philadelphia Inquirer“Entertaining. . . . Dexter is a fascinating character, though he’s not the kind of guy you’d like to invite to dinner.” —Chicago Sun-Times"Fun, terrifically fresh. . . . It's thrilling to watch Dexter struggle between everyday vanilla reality and the compelling, kaleidoscopic thrall of his own bloody fantasies." —Linda Marotta, Fangoria“Totally captivating. . . . Totally original. The characters are beautifully drawn, particularly Dexter, who is tremendously likeable, his hobby not withstanding.” —The St. Petersburg Times (FL)“Lindsay gets high marks for originality, atmosphere, vibrant action scenes and having the brass to write this in the first place.” —Tulsa World“Jeff Lindsay sure does it right with Darkly Dreaming Dexter.” —Cleveland Plain Dealer“Newcomer Jeff Lindsay has created a unique hero. . . . Intriguing.” —Mystery Scene“In creating a singularly unique killer, Lindsay also manages to create a few sleepless nights for the reader.” —Anniston Star (Anniston, AL)

those who write shouldn’t always read lol absolute cringe and not in a good way for this story. lots of mispronunciations and wrong tones for parts, even tho narrator is author I still think his own idea for debra is way too intense than how she’s truly coming across with all the foul language. especially in the 3rd book

Narration was great and story was great. It was a little funny and the author did a good job getting you to like a serial killer

Great - short though

If you're curious about which is better the book or the season 1 of the show, It's one of the rare few times you could argue that the show is but that's only because there's a great foundation laid in the book that the show built upon. There's things I like more in the show but also things I prefer here. Dexter is such an intriguing character and that shines through here. It's well worth a listen.

Same but different

similar to a lot of crime thrillers in many respects. This story has special significance since I saw the tv show first. It might be worthwhile to other readers who haven't seen the showto read this first.

start with the book

As a fan of the series, there are enough differences in here to leave you hungry for more.

Dexter in the books is much darker than the show.

He is more sloppy, less of a superhero and doesn't appear as human in comparison to the show. This is perfectly fine as he is a serial killer and this is the author's original vision on the character.

The narration is good as well as the story; filled with plenty of suspense and mystery.

I look forward to catching up on the rest of the series to see how it all ends.

If you're a fan of the series I recommend at least giving this one a listen to see if it's for you.

Not the same Dexter from the show

Rating based off being a fan of the show before ever reading/listening. Starts off quite similar to the TV show, but is VERY different. Though, different, it has the spirit and tone of the show.

Great narration that sounds and feels like the dexter we knew from the series.

Dark. Twisted. Highly entertaining.

Great story, ripe for adaptation. Season 1 felt like an extended version of the book.
I read this years ago when the series was still playing out.
After rewatching season 1 and listening to book 1 again in 2021, this story was ahead of its time.

Book or TV Series?.. BOTH.

If you liked the show you’ll most definitely like the book. However I feel as though the show was able to flush out many more characters but I really do like the depth of Dexter in this book and definitely will consider listening to the rest of this series!

Great book

a rare time when the tv show is better than the book. Terrible and juvenile writing. None of the female characters have any sort of redeeming qualities or can think for themselves which in this day and age is quite nauseating.

watch the show instead
