Histoire
In the spring of 1942, young Elzbieta Rabinek is aware of the swiftly growing discord just beyond the courtyard of her comfortable Warsaw home. She has no fondness for the Germans who patrol her streets and impose their curfews, but has never given much thought to what goes on behind the walls that contain her Jewish neighbors. She knows all too well about German brutality - and that it's the reason she must conceal her true identity. But in befriending Sara, Elzbieta makes a discovery that propels her into a dangerous world of deception and heroism.

Celebrated singer Genevieve Dumont is both a star and a smokescreen. An unwilling darling of the Nazis, the chanteuse’s position of privilege allows her to go undetected as an ally to the resistance. When her estranged mother, Lillian de Rocheford, is captured by Nazis, Genevieve knows it won’t be long before the Gestapo succeeds in torturing information out of Lillian that will derail the upcoming allied invasion. The resistance movement is tasked with silencing her by any means necessary - including assassination.

In the waning days of the Civil War, brothers Prentiss and Landry—freed by the Emancipation Proclamation—seek refuge on the homestead of George Walker and his wife, Isabelle. The Walkers, wracked by the loss of their only son to the war, hire the brothers to work their farm. Prentiss and Landry, meanwhile, plan to save money for the journey north and a chance to reunite with their mother, who was sold away when they were boys. Equal parts beauty and terror, The Sweetness of Water is an epic whose grandeur locates humanity and love amid the most harrowing circumstances.

August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

As the war begins, Hanna Rombauer, a young German woman, is sent to live with her aunt and uncle after her mother’s death. Thrown into a life of luxury she never expected, Hanna soon finds herself unwillingly matched with an SS officer twenty years her senior. The independence that her mother lovingly fostered in her is considered highly inappropriate as the future wife of an up-and-coming officer and she is sent to a “bride school.” There, in a posh villa on the outskirts of town, Hanna is taught how to be a “proper” German wife.

Description
For fans of The Nightingale and All the Light We Cannot See, a spellbinding story of impossible love set against the backdrop of the Nazi regime.
She must choose between loyalty to her country or a love that could be her destruction....
As the dutiful daughter of a high-ranking Nazi officer, Hetty Heinrich is keen to play her part in the glorious new Thousand Year Reich. But she never imagines that all she believes and knows about her world will come into stark conflict when she encounters Walter, a Jewish friend from the past, who stirs dangerous feelings in her. Confused and conflicted, Hetty doesn’t know whom she can trust and where she can turn to, especially when she discovers that someone has been watching her.
Realizing she is taking a huge risk - but unable to resist the intense attraction she has for Walter - she embarks on a secret love affair with him. Together, they dream about when the war will be over and plan for their future. But as the rising tide of anti-Semitism threatens to engulf them, Hetty and Walter will be forced to take extreme measures.
Will the steady march of dark forces destroy Hetty’s universe - or can love ultimately triumph? Propulsive, deeply affecting, and inspired by the author’s family history, Daughter of the Reich is a mesmerizing pause-resister filled with vivid characters and a meticulously researched portrait of Nazi Germany. In this riveting story of passion, courage, and morality, Louise Fein introduces a bold young woman determined to tread the treacherous path of survival and freedom, showing listeners the strength in the power of love and reminding us that the past must never be forgotten.

Daughter of the Reich
IT took till chapter 8 before I found this book of interest. The story gave insight into how women were controlled by the Reich and the unfounded absolute hatred the Germans had for the Jewish people.

Splendid historical fiction. Will read again.
This story really allows the reader to “see” and feel of the slow and sinister way what happened in Germany did. The main character is believable and not always likeable - which I really appreciated - you can’t help but root for these two star crossed lovers though. A creative way to show history and remind readers of the importance of human rights and freedom of speech.

Starts slow, give it time
The exposition in this piece is deep and well thought out. You understand why it’s necessary once you’re in, but at the beginning it was tricky to get into it. This is well researched piece of historical fiction that made me sob.

Interesting Perspective
So many books I have read often look at the Jewish, Polish, etc. side of World War 2, but I think it is also good to be reminded that not everyone on the German side agreed with Hitler's stance. This book explores that perspective. If you are a fan of WW2 novel's, this is a great read. Took a bit to get used to the narration, it went from breathy to grating often, but once I was able to get past that, I realized she was really capturing the emotion and rawness of the story.

The best pre-war book I’ve ever listened to
This audio book about first ten years leading up to ww2 was so enlightening . The hatred and brutality toward the Jews and German citizens were just brewing in their hatred of them. Even ten yrs before
Oh the unfairness of life . I kept hoping they could be together but never saw the end coming It also showed the goodness of many German people I look forward to more audio books by this author

Too many loose ends, the end left me angry
After a very slow first half of the book, I was angry at the end. There were so many loose ends. The book just sorta cut off! I replayed the previous chapter to see if I had accidentally moved the book forward but, no, it really was the end! Nothing very good happened. Not predictable for sure but so many things I hoped would happen and none of them did. Come on, now... It was annoying that the narrator had a British accent. Hard to take the mind to Germany. Her German accent was awful. It was a big disappointment. The only thing I liked was hearing a WWII story from the perspective of a German.

Excellent book
This is a wonderful read! I couldn’t put it down and hated when it ended. A must read!

Beautifully done!
I can not say enough about this story. Just beautifully done! The story itself was very well written but the narrator gave a wonderful performance!
This was a very sad time in history. this book should be required reading so it can bring attention to this point in time so it will never be repeated.
Get this audio book. I definitely recommend it. Sad but definitely makes you appreciate living in a free society even with some of the problems that comes with.
