Description

The countdown to Nemesis 3 has begun, pushing humanity closer to the brink of extinction.

James and his team are now Earth's last line of defense amidst the chaos of New York City. But with each Nemesis wave they defeat and each power James unveils, a grim truth unfolds: they're being manipulated.

The enemy not only predicts their actions, it feeds on them. Their struggle may be nothing more than a sinister game or a prelude to annihilation.

To stand a chance, they must rewrite the rules. In the dwindling light of hope, James embraces his role as a leader. Tough decisions, impossible sacrifices, and the weight of the world on his shoulders—he'll face it all.

Anything to break the system.

Sweet Mercy! What a fantastic series.

I’m sold. The story, the voice acting, the bad-assery…Don’t leave me hanging on book 2. I need…NEED the next book. Once in a while a series comes along that surprises you, has characters that you can just see in your minds eye perfectly and narration that brings them to life. It’s a unique take on LitRPG where the characters are more real, who don’t just gloss over the horrors of the situation, so the violence and action has weight. That’s not easy to do especially when powers are concerned. The fact that the author rounds out characters without the book becoming an emotional slog fest is hugely impressive, it’s not weighed down by its own big ideas or emotional baggage. As an example, with the series He Who Fights With Monsters, it does get a bit bogged down by Jason’s emotional damage…everybody being worried about Jason, delving into mental health and on and on and on about Jason this, Jason that.

The Exploration of the psyche is always an interesting and worthy endeavour, but it can become laborious if it tries primarily to use that mechanic as a way to spread a message or get a point across. It’s a component to any good character but mental illness in LitRPG’s shouldn’t become it’s own central character lest you spend too much time catering to one character or type of problem. When emotional stuff is treated more as a theme than a character it can be used to great effect and this book rides the knife edge of realism without tipping over into excessive and endless self reflection with no progress. It’s a theme that helps more fully realize these characters and ground them.

Serenity is really well written as are the other characters. The snappy dialogue, subtle jokes, dry humour and at times the subdued but quality pop culture references make for an enjoyable read. The action itself makes for an entertaining read and solid progressing occurs from the get go.

The pacing is informed by a system mechanic which helps drive the story progression and add tension. Well done. It was a novel use case and it works well.

The system is interesting, I think the author is toying with a massive system (I guess we will see) and what we see of it so far, and what’s hinted at is fascinating. Unique power sets, unique abilities, great progression.

I kid you not, if the author decides to go the distance with this series and make it more than a trilogy, then wow, I think the potential is staggering. But I haven’t looked into what the author has said about this series yet. I’m hoping he pushes and makes this intergalactic (so to speak) because it would be fun to follow these characters well beyond the next book.

The narrator is a master. Few narrators can actually do what this guy can. Remarkable. I swear you could tell what a character looks like or what they look like just by the voicing. It’s hard to explain but when you hear characters like Olaf voiced by Tom Taylorson, I’m floored. The nuances are incredible. Same with Serenity or James and many more. The accents, the vocal range, I mean…come on, I’m jealous. No one should be able to do such a convincing female voice and then voice James with his badass basso/baritone. Ridiculous. Like I said in my last review, he’s in my top 3 all time favourites for narration, if not my #1. Dude is a singular talent.

You get a sense of a much bigger universe that “may” exist. how the author chooses to tackle that or not is enticing. Sky is the limit for this series.
