À propos de cet audio

Gunplay. Word play. And you don’t know Jack Schmidt.

Jack Schmidt, ex-cop, is retired . . . and tired. He’s at loose ends. Dealing With Dymans presents the opportunity for Jack to get back into action as he unravels the mystery surrounding Dougie Dymans, the ne’er-do-well who’s been switching gemstones that come into his store. But Dougie’s gambling habit has become a losing proposition and once Jack Schmidt starts sniffing around, Dougie’s mob connection snaps like a fragile femur. Dougie has run short of money, his bookie needs a payment, and Ben “The Finger” Vincent has run out of patience.

Jock Mackenzie has spent his life helping kids find joy in reading, so it’s no surprise that his own book is such a joy to read. Dealing with Dymans is a crime novel with a twist—sharp, fast-paced, and packed with the kind of wordplay that only a lifelong educator (and expert dad-joke teller) could pull off. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked it up, but I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun reading a book. The characters feel like they just stepped out of a noir film and into a small-town Alberta bar, and Jack Schmidt, the retired cop at the heart of it all, is world-weary but quick-witted, with a pocket full of comebacks. Between the mystery and the humor, this is a book that keeps you hooked, and it also keeps you grinning. If you like your crime fiction with a little mischief, you won’t want to miss this one
