Five years ago Barbara Holloway gave up practicing law, disillusioned with a profession that put politics before justice. Then she receives a phone call, with a simple message: "I need you."

Nell Kendricks's husband disappeared seven years earlier, abandoning his young family. Nell hasn't seen him since, until the day Lucas Kendricks arrives at the edge of her property and is shot, instantly killed.

Accused of his murder, Nell turns to lawyer Frank Holloway for help. But Frank knows he cannot win this case alone. He calls upon his daughter Barbara, who remains "death qualified," legally able to defend clients who face the death penalty if convicted.

Barbara is determined to stay distanced from the case, but the more she learns, the more questions she finds herself asking. Is Nell innocent, as Frank attests? Where has Lucas Kendricks been for the past seven years? Despite her vow, Barbara finds herself drawn to the case and reclaims the search for truth that first led her to the law.

This Kate Wilhelm tale follows disillusioned litigator 'Barbara Holloway' enlisted to defend a secretive once-neighbor accused of murdering her estranged husband. Barbara faces off against an old lover in court, kindles a new love during this return to trial law, and builds on her relationship with her old-school lawyer father. The story is well-plotted and the case loaded with twists & turns (including witnesses perjuring themselves, uncovered secret recordings, and exposed human experimentaton).. but Wilhelm's balancing of on-the-stand testimony and personal life development is noticeably awkward. She can't seem to decide if she's writing a legal thriller or a romance. The characters furthermore never captivated me (Ms. Holloway is distinctly unlikable, for example).

As to presentation: reader Anna Fields narrates professionally.. but I found her tone far too matter-of-fact and her nasal "kids' reading-circle librarian" timbre + cadence moderately annoying after a few hours. Blackstone Audio could have cast this project far better than they did.

Altogether, 'Death Qualified' merits 6.5 stars out of 10. It was a reasonable download as an "included with your subscription" offering.. but not worth a Credit should they ask for one. Better options beckon.


[Incidentally: the entire concept of a "Death Qualified" lawyer seems bizarre to me. Is it even a thing? You see, I'm a doctor. Am I somehow better suited to treat a broken arm because I've had patients with breakable bones before? Weird]
