In general, I detest it when detectives are love-struck to the point that their investigation is biased and that a significant part of the narration is focused on their personal feelings. I really enjoyed the first of St. Just's mysteries because he felt like a reasonably competent and impartial investigator. Unfortunately, it is no longer the case in this volume which was a bit sappy for my taste although I liked some of the character development and the parlour scene.
