Description

The poison will kill his sister...unless James finds help.

But who can he trust?

Fifty years in the future, the ultrarich live in luxury in heavily protected cities. The rest of humanity eke out a living in a landscape destroyed by greed....

When five-year-old Rose is poisoned, the community of Sector 19 is resigned to her fate. The antidote lies in the city, beyond the reach of ordinary folk. Only her 17-year-old brother, James, refuses to give up hope.

When his bold plan to beat the border patrols fails, a mysterious woman offers to help. But he senses Amora is hiding something.

Can he trust her?

Will her plan succeed?

With his sister’s life hanging in the balance, James has no choice but to find out.

Perfect for fans of Divergent or The Hunger Games, Deception is packed with action and brimming with suspense.

Many elements taken from Hunger Games

The book started out interesting, but quickly grabbed onto some basic elements of the Hunger Games. The story had potential to be more than it was. I found there to be multiple spots where the book outright made no sense, not following character personality development and relationship development. James for example seemed illogically cold when you would have expected him to be kinder. also, he had from what I'd counted killed two police officers and seemed to not be affected by that at all. the relationship he developed with Amora also didn't feel particularly deep, yet the story tried to make you feel like it was a bit deeper. the part that annoyed me the most was when at the end of the book (this isn't much of a spoiler due to lack of context, warning nevertheless) In frustration from a situation involving his father, James ran away from Amora, and for who knows what reason, decided to shoot a gun in her general direction as he ran! LIKE WHY???? He doesn't hate her, the book has made it seem like they should feel some sort of friendship, yet he shoots a gun at her that could potentially kill her?? where's the logic in that?! I'm left baffled, wondering what I've just listened to and having no interest in reading the next book.

the writing is decent though. it really just badly needs to try and be more original, and to strip out the lack of logic
