Description

A mission gone wrong forces Brax's alpha team to become something more - a pack.

In a world that no longer welcomes packs, it's all Brax can do to hold his team together. Four alphas without omegas is a recipe for disaster. And now that they're civilians, with the military watching their every move, it's not going to be easy to keep the truth about their pack hidden.

Brax's most pressing problem is his buddy Duke's stolen son. Everywhere he turns for help is a dead end, until chance introduces him to Oliver, the capable, captivating omega - and legal advocate. Brax's luck might finally be turning around. But can he trust Oliver with more than just their legal troubles - can he trust him with his secrets?

Oliver has everything he could want in life-a successful career, the respect of his peers, an apartment in the city. But not an alpha. Been there, done that. No shifter he's dated could handle the fact that, some days, Oliver's job comes first. When the death of his estranged parents takes him back to his childhood home, he meets Brax - the handsome, troubled doctor who just might be the exception to the rule....

Contains mature themes.

Solid performance

I prefer Claire Cullen's books that don't center the military industrial complex (though at least this book is set somewhere imaginary) but I enjoyed this enough to listen after already reading it. I always enjoy this narrator.

Interesting premise but iffy follow through~

Audio 5/5
John Solo's narration is solid as usual. Good emoting that really gives life to the characters!

Story 2.5/5
The premise is interesting and I appreciated that though we get the typical moment of instant interest (and over the phone at that!) Brax and Oliver get time to live in the world a bit before things start to happen between them. That being said, I found their relationship to be quite underdeveloped and the romance seems to be the weakest aspect of the narrative as a whole. The dialogue in chapter 13 and 14 felt so contrived I actually rolled my eyes. Thankfully, that was the only particularly cringeworthy part of the text.

The romance aside, the rest of the story did work for me. The world also felt rather underdeveloped but I found myself invested in the pack and custody case. Duke's kid is a treasure! All things considered, I actually enjoyed the scenes with the children the most.

I also really appreciated the parallelism between the pack to nuclear family model in the story and the irl modern shifts from extended family groups to a focus on the whole mom + dad + 2.5 kids thing. It gave an intriguing spin to an otherwise common abo shifter story.

The matters with the military also showed promise though I don't think it was executed particularly well. Even as the military looms in the background as this antagonistic presence, the threat never feels real.

Overall 3/5
There were a lot of things that intrigued me but few things really landed right. I am a bit curios to see how the story develops with the other characters because I do think the concept shows promise and I like listening to Solo's narration. However, realistically i doubt I'll be continuing this series.
