Description

WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE WINNER OF THE WOMEN'S PRIZE FOR FICTION

A New York Times "Ten Best Books of the Year" • An Oprah’s Book Club Selection • An Instant New York Times Bestseller • An Instant Wall Street Journal Bestseller • A #1 Washington Post Bestseller

"Demon is a voice for the ages—akin to Huck Finn or Holden Caulfield—only even more resilient.” —Beth Macy, author of Dopesick

"May be the best novel of [the year]. . . . Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, this is the story of an irrepressible boy nobody wants, but readers will love.” (Ron Charles, Washington Post)

From the acclaimed author of The Poisonwood Bible and The Bean Trees, a brilliant novel that enthralls, compels, and captures the heart as it evokes a young hero’s unforgettable journey to maturity

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.

Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens’ anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they can’t imagine leaving behind.

Brilliant narration of beautifully written story

The narrator was top notch. His pacing, his inflection and accent all bought you right into the mind of Daemon. At first I was upset that it just seemed to be a retelling of David Copperfield using different names without bringing anything significantly new but the author did a great job of reimagining the original into a very relevant and contemporary story that was heartbreakingly poignant. Kudos to both the author and the narrator. Loved this book

exceptional

Absolutely stunning. One of Kingsolver's best. Awards will be in her future for this, and well deserved! I enjoyed every minute of this listen for the story, the writing, which was stunningly poetic yet perfectly suited to character and setting, and the delivery, which was riveting. Bravo, all around. This was a true gift to the world.

Barbara Kingslover strikes again

I wasn't too sure if I would enjoy this as an audiobook but with Kingslover you can't go wrong. very moving for me having experienced some of the things that are in the book. I have yet to find a book of hers that I haven't loved, starting with The Bean Trees back when I was in high-school. and even though most of those days were lost in drug induced haze, I never forgot that. thank you for writing this novel , delving into the depths of this and then giving hope.

I didn’t want it to end

Beautifully written, heartbreaking testament to the capacity for resilience in the face of the inequities in our world. I found myself wishing that Demon was real and that he was my friend.

Truly brilliant story and performance

Such endearing characters, in the midst of such devastating circumstances. Ms. Kingsolver is the most amazing storyteller. The research that must have gone into every detail of this book is astounding. I love what an activist she is, using her craft to bring light to very important, urgent issues of our time. Charlie Thurston deserves an Oscar.

Riveting, shocking, humbling

What an incredible listen/ read and a fabulous performance. It covers the terrible story of opioid addiction in rural US from the point of view of an orphaned boy who also experiences the foster system, also shocking. Its not depressing though as there are good people who try their best and provide hope and love. I almost started it again from the beginning it was so good. The narration is also first class. The narrator subtly changes his voice and inflection as the boy gets older, brilliant acting.

Audiobook narrator brought the story to life

Despite starting Demon Copperhead on paperback I kept coming back to the audiobook version to hear the narrator bring it alive. Similar to how Barbara Kingsolver brought Appalachia to life for those of us that know it only for it's headline capturing troubles of late. A strong and incredibly memorable performance of a well-crafted and important story. Highly recommend.
