Description

Jon Culshaw reads the brand-new novelisation of a classic Doctor Who adventure by Douglas Adams.

The hugely powerful Key to Time has been split into six segments, all of which have been disguised and hidden throughout time and space. Now the even more powerful White Guardian wants the Doctor to find the pieces.

With the first segment successfully retrieved, the Doctor, Romana and K9 trace the second segment of the Key to the planet Calufrax. But when they arrive at exactly the right point in space, they find themselves on exactly the wrong planet - Zanak.

Ruled by the mysterious 'Captain', Zanak is a happy and prosperous planet. Mostly. If the mines run out of valuable minerals and gems then the Captain merely announces a New Golden Age, and they fill up again. It's an economic miracle - so obviously something's very wrong.

Duration: 10 hours approx.

Does justice to Douglas Adams's time with Dr. Who

This was an excellent presentation. What a genius idea to novelize the Douglas Adams scripts in his prose style a la Hitchhiker's etc. Credit to James Goss for pulling it off. And then double-stroke of genius in getting ace impersonator Jon Culshaw to read/perform this book - it's the next best thing to having Tom Baker read it. Well, actually Jon's better here because the variety of voices used for narration, other characters...

The story starts slow and I remember thinking at the original viewing as a kid - this one is in left field. But in many ways, Adams understood classic-sci-fi genre better than a lot of other British writers and there are classic elements that resonate, especially in the 2nd half when more is revealed.

I was expecting this to be a 3.0/5 for me or maybe a 3.5/5 - but this production really won me over - 6 out of 5! Amazing bonus scoring Jon Culshaw. he does the other Douglas Adams ones? Krikkitmen and Shada? Sign me up. City of Death too must be a (forgive me!) - WHOot

It started off a bit slow, almost forced - but stick with it - the 2nd half and ending make it worth it
