Going to the doctor can often be frightening for younger children. This measured account, part of the Jobs People Do series (8 titles), works to alleviate those fears by giving kids basic insight into what doctors do, the tools they use, and the many different types of doctors that exist. Though the images used are generally stock photos, they are well labeled, and a spread of different items that kids might see in a doctor's office (including a stethoscope, otoscope, and rubber hammer) is especially useful. The text, comprised of short, clear sentences, neatly explains the basics of the diagnostic process and the steps someone would take to become a doctor. Back matter mentions two famous doctors (Hippocrates and Elizabeth Blackwell) and contains fast facts and places to find more information. (Maggie Reagan)
