Description

In the tradition of Band of Brothers, acclaimed combat historian Patrick K. O’Donnell cinematically tells one of World War II’s greatest untold stories.

It is said that the right man in the right place at the right time can mean the difference between victory and defeat. This is the dramatic story of 68 soldiers in the US Army's Second Ranger Battalion, Company D - "Dog Company" - who made that difference, time and again. From D-day, when German guns atop Pointe du Hoc threatened the Allied landings and the men of Dog Company scaled the sheer 90-foot cliffs to destroy them; to the slopes of Hill 400, in Germany’s Hürtgen Forest, where the Rangers launched a desperate bayonet charge across an open field; to a "quiet" section of the Ardennes, where Dog Company suddenly found itself on the tip of the spear at the Battle of the Bulge; the men of Dog Company made the difference.

America had many heroes in World War II; however, few can say that, but for them, the course of the war would have been very different. The right men, the right place, the right time - Dog Company.

Patrick K. O’Donnell is the award-winning author of eight books, including the highly acclaimed account of the Battle of Fallujah We Were One. He has provided historical consulting for Band of Brothers and multiple documentaries. He lives in Austin, Texas.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"A great American writer." (Clive Cussler)
"The author’s most important accomplishment among many is to put a human face on the troops who are fighting against some of the fiercest enemies America has ever encountered.… Read O’Donnell’s excellent book." ( New York Post on We Were One)

Very well written

For a book following a whole company he did a really good job keeping it easy enough to follow.

Mindblowing Anecdotes

There is nothing particularly incredible about Patrick K. O'Donnell's documentation of truly incredible events. He largely acts as a "curator" - compiling recollections from survivors of an elite Special Ops unit and entries from After-Action Reports into a chronological narrative (from recruitment to training to action) - more or less *obligatory*, no?
Where O'Donnell excels is in delivering the stories at a brilliant pace and injecting humanity into almost unbelievable testimonies. He adds judicious direct quotes - including from German defenders & French citizens hungry for liberation - to weave authenticity into the chronicle, for example.
It's the content that makes this offering worthwhile, however. The men in this US Army Ranger company conducted high-risk missions with astounding bravery in the midst of horrifying trauma. By the end of the book, I developed an incredible level of respect for the men that fought when their country called..
"The Greatest Generation" is obviously hyperbolic - but also accurate.

John Pruden reads too slowly, but puts in a performance commensurate with O'Donnell's literary effort. He genuinely brings the reminiscences to life: equally comfortable relating off-duty banter, harrowing screams during combat, and the anguished confession of friendly-fire incidents. Pruden was an excellent casting choice.
Additionally, above-average quality standards from Blackstone Audio match the high quality presentation. Volume modulation is spot-on and spliced segments are seamless.

I have read better War memoirs, but this 8.5/10 star effort is well worth a listen. I feel very fortunate that I could get 'Dog Company' as part of the 'Plus' catalogue (included in my subscription) - because it's actually worth a Credit.

[Incidentally: Rocket-propelled grappling hooks are some serious Batman sh*t]

I love John Prudence so it was an easy sell for me. Fantastic stories for any WW2 enthusiast who enjoys some wicked stories of fails and triumphs! Worth a listen.

Great story

It was a great book, with interesting details. Reminded me the TV series Band of Brothers which was also excellent.
