Description

By the one-time federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York, an important overview of the way our justice system works, and why the rule of law is essential to our society. Using case histories, personal experiences, and his own inviting teaching style, Preet Bharara describes the thought process we need to best achieve truth and justice in our daily lives and within our society.

Preet Bharara has spent much of his life examining our legal system, pushing to make it better, and prosecuting those looking to subvert it. Bharara believes in our system and knows it must be protected, but to do so, we must also acknowledge and allow for flaws in the system and in human nature.

The book is divided into four sections: Inquiry, Accusation, Judgment and Punishment. He describes why each step of this process is crucial to the legal system, but he also tells us how we all need to think about each stage of the process to achieve truth and justice in our daily lives.

Bharara uses anecdotes and case histories from his legal career - the successes as well as the failures - to illustrate the realities of the legal system, and the consequences of taking action (and in some cases, not taking action, which can be just as essential when trying to achieve a just result).

Much of what Bharara discusses is inspiring - it gives us hope that rational and objective fact-based thinking, combined with compassion, can truly lead us on a path toward truth and justice. Some of what he talks about will be controversial and cause much discussion. Ultimately, it is a thought-provoking, entertaining book about the need to find the humanity in our legal system - and in our society.

Ce que les critiques disent

"The former federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York skillfully explains how he approached his job, offering a mixture of guiding principles and compelling anecdotes. Unlike many lawyers who write books, Bharara refreshingly avoids jargon, striking a conversational tone and regularly employing analogies and metaphors that make his points easily understandable. An engaging tour from beginning to end." (Kirkus Starred Review)

"Like the best lawyers (and writers), Preet Bharara tells a good war story. But Doing Justice is a great deal more - a vivid memoir of a critical job, a primer on the toughest questions of prosecutorial ethics, and a reminder of the drama inherent in life in the courtroom arena." (Jeffrey Toobin, author of American Heiress: The Kidnapping, Crimes and Trial of Patty Hearst)

Timely released

This timely released book is worth every penny. It’s informative, educational, interesting, and enjoyable.

Preet Bharara reads the audible with such clarity and distinction it rivals articulate. The cases he writes about are so much more understood than previous reports. He is intelligent and knowledgeable without being arrogant. His ability to be humble and thoughtful is throughout this book.

As with his podcast, his voice is very soothing. There’s a gentleness he possess that he can transfer to his guests.

This book was needed because my mother suffered an aneurysm on the 19th and died March 21st and all I wanted was a sense of calm. Although there are heavy topics Bharara speaks about I was able to breathe through my pain and heartache. I preordered this book and thankfully he did not disappoint my expectations.

Buy the book !! I’m not easily impressed and this book impressed me.

A Must Read

If you are interested in the legal system ad how it works from a prosecutor's perspective or if you just want to read a very good book, this is the one to choose. Mr. Bharara's writing style is down to earth, at times funny, and very insightful. Please write another book soon! There will be unlimited analysis opportunities related to the Trump administration and its negative effect on the United States and the world. I really appreciate Mr. Bharara reading this book himself. I don't think it would have been as impactful if read by someone else.

Bahara: The Soverign Southern District of New York

In a revealing, moving, surprising and funny memoir, Peet Bahara, former U. S. Attorney , SDNY, delivers the human face of federal law enforcement. Bahara marries his devotion to justice and his open, supportive management style to his ability to spot and describe characters worth getting to know. He narrate his war stories well, telling these from a decidedly compassionate point of view. A shame he was fired by President Trump.

Awesome and Inspirational

With the last two year of presidential denigration of rules of law norms of our society this book could not have arrived at a more appropriate time. This book covers, in very human terms, the path Justice in our society takes. I feel encouraged about the future of Law and Justice in our country. Many thanks to Pretty Bharara for his time and effort in delivering this book!

Extraordinary true stories, beautifully narrated

I have been a great admirer of Preet Bharara's views and analyses since I first heard him speak with Sam Harris on the "Waking Up" (now "Making Sense") podcast in Feb. 2018. After that interview, I immediately subscribed to Preet's podcast and still eagerly await hearing from him and his guests every week. Having listened to him for months, I knew I had to get the Audible edition of this book, narrated by the author.

With my own bias known, I was still surprised how much I loved this book. It is logically organized, detailing key experiences and insight over his legal career. I found it thought provoking, inspirational and full of reverence and love for the rule of law and the dedicated women and men who serve the law. It also devotes time to the limitations and short-comings of our legal system.

Preet is a much needed voice of calm reason, respect and humanity in these troubled times with just the right mix of humor to keep us sane. Thank you, Preet!

Smart person with a kind heart writes a book.

Great book, lots of valuable insights.

But most important for me was the basic fact that such kind and thoughtful people exist in the world.

That knowledge and the feeling this knowing brings is well worth the price of this book.
