I am biased by my love of Dickens, and feel much of his lesser work is still far above most authors. The reason I didn’t like this one quite as much as some of his others is the lack of social satire and humour. Most of Dickens books critique mich of Victorian England by the use of satire, but that was missing in Dombey & Son. The book still includes Dickens‘ outstanding ability to develop characters and create images in the mind by his vivid words.
For a comparison of my Dickens‘ taste I would rank David Copperfield, The Old Curiosity Shop and Little Dorrit at the top. A Christmas Carol would rank at the very bottom; and Dombey & Son would be just above that.
The narration of this unabridged and complete book was excellent.
