As the nation recovers from the Trump presidency, many questions remain: Why was the COVID-19 pandemic so grossly mishandled? How did we get so politically polarized? What caused White nationalist groups to come out of the shadows, and are they here to stay? The answers lie the twisted story of the relationship between Donald Trump and Fox News. Through firsthand accounts from over 250 current and former Fox insiders, CNN anchor and chief media correspondent Brian Stelter unlocks the inner workings of Rupert Murdoch’s multibillion-dollar media empire.

Woodward, the number-one international bestselling author of Fear: Trump in the White House, has uncovered the precise moment the president was warned that the Covid-19 epidemic would be the biggest national security threat to his presidency. In dramatic detail, Woodward takes readers into the Oval Office as Trump’s head pops up when he is told in January 2020 that the pandemic could reach the scale of the 1918 Spanish Flu that killed 675,000 Americans.

When he opened the FBI investigation into Russia’s election interference, Peter Strzok had already spent more than two decades defending the United States against foreign threats. His career in counterintelligence ended shortly thereafter, when the Trump administration used his private expression of political opinions to force him out of the Bureau in August 2018. But by that time, Strzok had seen more than enough to convince him that the commander in chief had fallen under the sway of America’s adversary in the Kremlin.

Donald Trump's campaign chairman went to jail. So did his personal lawyer. His long-time political consigliere was convicted of serious federal crimes, and his national security advisor pled guilty to others. Career intelligence agents and military officers were alarmed enough by the president's actions that they alerted senior government officials and ignited the impeachment process. Yet despite all this, a years-long inquiry led by special counsel Robert Mueller, and the third impeachment of a president in American history, Donald Trump survived to run for re-election. Why?

From June 2019 until his firing by President Trump after the November 2020 election, Secretary Mark T. Esper led the Department of Defense through an unprecedented time in history - a period marked by growing threats and conflict abroad, a global pandemic unseen in a century, the greatest domestic unrest in two generations, and a White House seemingly bent on breaking accepted norms and conventions for political advantage. A Sacred Oath is Esper's unvarnished and candid memoir of those extraordinary and dangerous times, and includes events and moments never before told.

How did America end up with a leader who acts so crudely and despotically, and counter to our democratic principles? Why do his followers stick with him, even when he acts against their interests? John Dean, a man with a history of standing up to autocratic presidents, joins with Bob Altemeyer, a psychology professor with a unique area of expertise: authoritarianism. Together, using psychological diagnostic tools, as well as exclusive research and analysis from the Monmouth University Polling Institute, the authors provide us with an eye-opening understanding of the Trump phenomenon.

By the time she became US Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch had seen her share of corruption, instability, and tragedy in developing countries. But it came as a shock when, in early 2019, she was recalled from her post after a smear campaign by President Trump’s personal attorney and his associates - men operating outside of normal governmental channels, and apparently motivated by personal gain. Her courageous participation in the subsequent impeachment inquiry earned Yovanovitch the nation’s respect, and her dignified response to the president’s attacks won our hearts.

Description
New York Times Best Seller •
With unparalleled reporting, a Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter chronicles the clash between a president and the officials of his own government who tried to stop him.
“A meticulously reported volume that clearly benefits from the author’s extraordinary access...[a] startling dissection of the Trump presidency.” (The New York Times)
Drawing on secret FBI and White House documents and confidential sources inside federal law enforcement and the West Wing, Donald Trump v. The United States tells the dramatic, high-stakes story of those who felt compelled to confront and try to contain the 45th president of the United States as he shredded norms and sought to expand his power, bringing American democracy to the brink.
Michael S. Schmidt broke many of the major stories of the Trump era, from the news of Hillary Clinton’s use of a personal email account to the report on the memos of former FBI director James Comey’s conversations with Trump that led directly to the appointment of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III. In Donald Trump v. The United States, Schmidt takes us inside the defining events of a presidency, chronicling the clash between an increasingly emboldened president and the officials of his own government who found themselves trying to thwart the president they had once pledged to serve. Through their eyes and ears, we observe an epic struggle to stop a rogue agent in our nation’s highest office. A vital work of journalism, Donald Trump v. The United States is a riveting contemporary history and a lasting account of just how fragile and vulnerable American democracy really is.
Ce que les critiques en disent
“[Michael S.] Schmidt chronicles how the professionals around the president tried to bring order to the White House and to keep Trump within the bounds of the law.... A powerful accounting of ... lawlessness and chaos.” (The Washington Post)

Great content. Needs great narrator.
Michael Schmidt is a gifted journalist. I love his contributions on cable news. But for me, his reading performance for a whole book was a tough go. It was his great content and integrity that kept me hanging in to the end.
I recommend re-releasing the book with Jeff Daniels (or Mark Ruffalo) as the narrator. I'd buy it again!!

Should have hired a narrator.
This is probably an awesome book. I’m going to have to buy the print version, though. The author’s narration is simultaneously overly-emphatic and monotone, which is exhausting to listen to. I couldn’t even make it through the first chapter and I doubt I retained any of it due to aural fatigue.

In this book Michael Schmidt was able to fill in the blanks of the story of President Trump’s time in the White House. It is without question the finest first draft of history in recent times and I believe an example of the journalistic integrity of the reporters at the New York Times.

Every American needs to read this book before they cast their ballot this year. Michael Schultz's investigation is exhausting and his narrative is remarkable. The narration is skillful and passionate, he needs to narrate another. The ending was the hardest part to digest.

Every American should read this.
Every American should read this before the 2020 presidential election. Most of this has been revealed elsewhere, except for the fact that Trump’s ties to the Russian government have not been investigated at all. Yet, it is presented in a well organized, chronological fashion that has not been done, to my knowledge.

Nothing we didn’t already know
While the book lines up the more events in order it doesn’t touch on the current events. There’s nothing about Nunes clandestine visit to the White House. And nothing about 45’s fomenting division throughout the USA. I was disappointed that the book didn’t cover events beyond Barr wanting to release Stone.
