Description

New York Times best seller • With unparalleled reporting, a Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter continues to break news about the most important political story of our lives as he chronicles the clash between a president and the officials of his own government who tried to stop him.

In the early days of the Trump presidency, the people who work in the institutions that make America America saw Trump up close in the Oval Office and became convinced that they had to stand up to an unbound president. These officials faced a situation without parallel in American history: What do you do, and who do you call, if you are the only one standing between the president, his extraordinary powers, and the abyss?

Michael S. Schmidt’s Donald Trump v. the United States tells the dramatic, high-stakes story of those who felt compelled to confront and try to contain the most powerful man in the world as he shredded norms and sought to expand his power.

Schmidt has broken many of the major stories of the Trump era, from the news of Hillary Clinton’s use of a personal email account to the report on former FBI director James Comey’s contemporaneous memos of conversations with Trump that led directly to the appointment of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III. Now he takes us inside the defining events of the presidency, chronicles them up close, and records the clash between an increasingly emboldened president and those around him, who find themselves trying to thwart the president they had pledged to serve, unsure whether he is acting in the interest of the country, his ego, his family business, or Russia. Through their eyes and ears, we observe an epic struggle.

Drawing on secret FBI and White House documents and confidential sources inside federal law enforcement and the West Wing, Donald Trump v. the United States is vital journalism, recording the shocking reality of a presidency like no other, a riveting contemporary history, and a lasting account of just how fragile and vulnerable the institutions of American democracy really are.

Michael Schmidt is amazing

This book was riviting. So many dangling questions are answered and it adds so much texture to the history of what's happened since the election. It's disturbing to see the level of corruption through out the levels of politics and business. Trumps level of corruption is so beyond the pale even for the corrupt and wealthy.

I was hopeful. 😔

This book is descent but nothing I haven’t heard before. The narrator is rather monotone and at times frustrating.

Great content. Needs great narrator.

Michael Schmidt is a gifted journalist. I love his contributions on cable news. But for me, his reading performance for a whole book was a tough go. It was his great content and integrity that kept me hanging in to the end. I recommend re-releasing the book with Jeff Daniels (or Mark Ruffalo) as the narrator. I'd buy it again!!

OMG THE NARRATOR

I haven’t finished this book, and although I want to, I don’t know if I will because I DO NOT like the way he reads this book. I have nothing bad to say about the content of the book, but OMG I wish somebody else had narrated.

Insightful read

This offers us the public a small peak inside the truth of our democracy which is being eroded and hidden from us.

Interesting Times

A first draft of history as written by the winners. Because truth and justice always win in our country, Mr. Barr.

Clarification

In this book Michael Schmidt was able to fill in the blanks of the story of President Trump’s time in the White House. It is without question the finest first draft of history in recent times and I believe an example of the journalistic integrity of the reporters at the New York Times.

Should have hired a narrator.

This is probably an awesome book. I’m going to have to buy the print version, though. The author’s narration is simultaneously overly-emphatic and monotone, which is exhausting to listen to. I couldn’t even make it through the first chapter and I doubt I retained any of it due to aural fatigue.

This is a "must read" for every American,

Every American needs to read this book before they cast their ballot this year. Michael Schultz's investigation is exhausting and his narrative is remarkable. The narration is skillful and passionate, he needs to narrate another. The ending was the hardest part to digest.

Amazing

So much information that I didn’t know, as a political junkie this is a must have for a behind the scenes look at how stories develop.

Every American should read this.

Every American should read this before the 2020 presidential election. Most of this has been revealed elsewhere, except for the fact that Trump’s ties to the Russian government have not been investigated at all. Yet, it is presented in a well organized, chronological fashion that has not been done, to my knowledge.

Nothing we didn’t already know

While the book lines up the more events in order it doesn’t touch on the current events. There’s nothing about Nunes clandestine visit to the White House. And nothing about 45’s fomenting division throughout the USA. I was disappointed that the book didn’t cover events beyond Barr wanting to release Stone.
