Minnie Cooper knows two things with certainty: that her New Year's birthday is unlucky, and that it's all because of Quinn Hamilton, a man she's never met. Their mothers gave birth to them at the same hospital just after midnight on New Year's Day, but Quinn was given the cash prize for being the first baby born in London in 1990 - and the name Minnie was meant to have, as well. With luck like that, it's no wonder each of her birthdays has been more of a disaster than the one before.

Can you fall in love like they do in the movies? It's Evie Summers' job to find out. Because if she can't convince her film agency's biggest client, Ezra Chester, to write the romantic-comedy screenplay he owes producers, her career will be over. The catch? He thinks rom-coms are unrealistic - and he'll only put pen to paper if Evie shows him that it's possible to meet a man in real life the way it happens on the big screen. Cynical Evie might not believe in happily ever after, but she'll do what it takes to save the job that's been her lifeline.

Kristen Petersen doesn't do drama, will fight to the death for her friends, and has no room in her life for guys who just don't get her. She's also keeping a big secret: facing a medically necessary procedure that will make it impossible for her to have children. Planning her best friend's wedding is bittersweet for Kristen - especially when she meets the best man, Josh Copeland. He's funny, sexy, never offended by her mile-wide streak of sarcasm, and always one chicken enchilada ahead of her hangry. Even her dog, Stuntman Mike, adores him. The only catch: Josh wants a big family.

Description
You always remember your first love. Don't you?
It began with four words.
I love your laugh. x
But that was 12 years ago. It really began the day Georgina was fired from The Worst Restaurant in Sheffield (TripAdvisor) and found The Worst Boyfriend in the World (Georgina's best friends) in bed with someone else.
So when her new boss, Lucas McCarthy, turns out to be the boy who wrote those words to her all that time ago, it feels like the start of something.
The only problem? He doesn't seem to remember Georgina at all.

Shockingly witty, touching and hilarious.
Let me start by saying, I expected nothing when I downloaded this book. I was looking for something I wouldn't mind falling asleep during, because I was being kept up really late by my toddler as he worked through a bout of congestion. Regardless, not only did I not fall asleep during this at all, I actually absolutely loved it.
I will admit this is not my genre. I'm usually listening to distopian fiction or a psychological thriller of some sort, definitely bleaker fare than this. So, I can't make any comparisons. I also never listened to this author before and have no idea how this book stacks up against the rest.
However, all that aside, here's what I can say about this book. The story is truly touching. I both laughed out loud (a few times actually!), and cried. The characters have depth, and although it is a love story, that's really not the central theme. It's about loss, coming to terms with the past, and consequently, moving on and embracing the future.
It is written well. Really well. The humour is sharp, I actually cackled in a few places. Although the story is occasionally predictable, the rawness of some of the moments still caught me off guard.
Finally, the narration leaves nothing to be desired. This is the right balance between acting out the various characters and telling the story as a single person.
Well done!

IMO, Unlistenable
I think I am the only one who felt this way, but I found this narrator unlistenable. The story is sweet enough, I guess, but I had to stop about 4 hours in because I simply couldn't tolerate it anymore. I had a hard time distinguishing characters and often found myself wondering who was speaking. I wanted to enjoy this book because I was looking for a "fluffier" listen. Couldn't do it though. Sorry!

This book gave me all the feels. I was laughing and smiling and sometimes frustrated and sad. I highly reccomend it for anyone looking for a slice of life novel with a bit of romance. And the narration was one of the best, a great job. I'll be looking more into Mhairi McFarlane's novels. I am hooked and how the way she writes.

I can't finish this
This is the first book I've read by this author, and I can tell by reading other reviews of it that she's quite popular. I understand the charm, her style is very Jill Mansell, with a charming female protagonist who goes through a series of kooky misadventures but triumphs in the end, and falls in love (almost as an after thought) along the way. I get it, I do, but I've personally read too many of these and I need to move on.
I might've made it through, but the slow pacing just didn't pull me along - a lot of the scenes and characters felt superfluous, particularly as reading the summary makes you think the main plot will be the love story, but the book itself drags on and on with only passing allusions to Lucas (who honestly, seems a bit of a drip). She's a good writer, and I would possibly borrow one of her books from a library, but I wouldn't spend a credit.

Fantastic (Especially for Rom Com Fans)
Excellent performance and SUPERBLY written, this more than satisfied my Bridget-Jones-Four-Weddings-Golden-Era-Rom-Com itch. It has a backbone of real emotion, is very enjoyably witty, and has a genuinely likeable heroine. I can't wait to read/listen to more from this author.
